Gaming has always been favored by millions of people. It’s said that Abraham Lincoln was an avid Gamer…just kidding. Seriously though, video games are given hours upon hours of attention by addicted Gamers everywhere every day. Just about all of that time playing games is spent sitting down staring at a screen. Of course, this is fun and great for the mind of the gamers, but it’s not the same story for the body.
In most games today, there is always a sort of Health property that must be monitored. Characters are kept alive by using potions, herbs, and other various methods. These items keep the characters’ health in good standing. However, there is one factor that is more important to our characters entire existence than any other. That factor is us, the Gamers. If our health is not kept in good standing, our entire gaming world is put on hold. For this reason, I have listed 3 healthier snacks and 3 quick exercises all gamers can incorporate between loading screens and intermissions!
Let’s begin with the snacks:
Chips are a huge go-to snack for Gamers, but they are definitely unhealthy for you. Especially when you find yourself eating an entire bag while binge gaming. Instead, grab some pita bread the next time you’re at the store. You can cut these into triangles, sprinkle some cheese over top (my personal favorite is sharp cheddar), and toss them in the oven for about 12 minutes. Now you’ve got yourself a more filling treat that has a good deal of protein to keep those fast twitch muscles nurtured!
I occasionally find myself munching mindlessly on sweet candies like Skittles or Starburst and occasionally Sour Patch Kids. An amazing alternative to these are frozen fruits! I like to take purple grapes, throw them in the freezer for a bit, and whenever I’m ready to game, I grab a bowl of frozen grapes!
I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t love Hot Pockets. I go for hot pockets even when I’m away from my games. These delicious snacks are as close to a full meal as it gets when it comes to eating while gaming, but they’re aren’t exactly as healthy as a normal meal. Lately, I have started boiling a few eggs before I sit down to game. Hard boiled eggs are easy to make and can be prepared DURING a gaming session. You can’t argue with eggs when it comes to their health benefits!
Now let’s take a look at some exercises:
It’s that simple. Standing up and/or walking around helps to get the blood flowing in your legs after long periods of sitting in front of a screen. It’s actually dangerous to sit for hours at a time without moving! High blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat gathering at the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels are a few concerns of sitting for too long. So the next time you are wrecking noobs all night long, make time to stand up between rounds or loading screens.
Finger and Wrist Stretches
A Gamers career revolves almost entirely around his or her hands. If you neglect your hands, you could end up damaging them permanently. Before assuming the position in front of your TV, give yourself 5 minutes to focus on your real play-makers! Finger abductions and thumb oppositions are great ways to strengthen your muscles and keep your digits limber!
Push Ups, Squats, and Sit Ups
If you are really wanting to perfect your body while gaming, you need some more serious exercises. On those loading screens and cut scenes, try pumping out as many push ups, squats, or sit ups as you can before getting back to the game! Alternate between the 3 with every break you get. None of these are as good as dedicating time for the gym or a long walk, but when you’ve got a great game that demands a lot of your time, this is the best way to shed some pounds or to simply keep your figure!
With this newfound knowledge, try applying it to your life. You may end up feeling better even outside of your games!
