This is my Top 5 Shotguns In Videogames. So what makes a great shotgun? It packs a punch, the sound complements the punch, and lastly it’s judged on the damage it does, especially in close range. So without further ado here are my top 5 shotguns:
5 – Bulletstorm – Boneduster Quad barrel
What’s better than a double-barrel shotgun? A goddamn quad-barrel shotgun. Bulletstorm took the good-old FPS games approach akin to Doom and Half-Life 2, but added lots of crack to the formula. The Boneduster on its own is designed with all the factors that make a great shotgun, but what sets it apart (other than being quad-barrel), is the game’s skill shots mechanics. You can headshot an enemy and obliterate his head, shoot his legs off, shoot a downed enemy and send his body wiping the floor, etc.
4- Half-Life 2 – SPAS-12
It’s basic, it’s awesome and it’s based on a real gun. The Half-Life series is well known for its amazing arsenal of creative, well-made weapons and the shotgun sits amongst the top best weapons in the game. Like all the weapons in HL2, the shotgun packs a punch with great sound design as it is, but add to it the alternative fire and you shoot enemies with double-barrel blasts to kingdom come.
3- F.E.A.R – VK12 Combat shotgun
F.E.A.R was suppose to be a horror game, but your arsenal of weapons and the slow-mo mechanics makes you the player, the horror. And equipped with the VK12 you’re even further unstoppable. What sets the VK12 apart and makes it part of this list is how devastating the weapon is, and how amazing it is to wield and shoot as you blast through enemies in slow-mo right and left.
2- Doom 2016 – Super Shotgun
The Doom series is one of the first FPS games and that had a huge hand in defining the genre. Whether it’s the shotgun, the chainsaw or the BFG. The way the shotgun was designed and used in the game set the standards as to how many FPS games, to this day, design their shotguns. Flash Forward and we get a Doom reboot and my God, from the intro, the shotgun sets the mood to how the game will play, and if later on you get the Super Shotgun you’ll be excited. It’s everything the shotgun is but…SUPER.
1- Gears Of War – Gnasher
GOW is an icon of its time. The themes, characters, world, enemies, and guns are all aggressive, shredded, dark and gory as fuck. The way the Gnasher is designed makes the player play close range and in-your-face, and it rewards you by instant killing most enemies with a blast of gore that fills the screen. The way the shotgun plays is also complimented further by the game’s cover mechanics. You will shuffle from cover to wall and wall to cover while blasting enemies with the Gnasher right and left, ending with awesome family unfriendly fun.
