AlphaDraft has announced they will be sponsoring a new Hearthstone league along with business partner Archon. This is good news for the fantasy draft giant since they have announced Hearthstone can now draft players in a similar fashion to other popular esports like League of Legends, CS:GO, Dota 2, and Smite.
Archon Team League Championship will boast a prize pool of $250,000; which is nothing to sneeze at considering only one other tournament, which is the world championships, matches that prize pool.
Unlike the world championships, the ATLC will be a team based league. Which was an important part of why AlphaDraft decided to add the game to its company, according to CEO Todd Peterson.
“Popularity (along with the availability of verifiable stats in real-time) certainly figures into prioritizing what eSports titles we support first,” said Peterson. “Because Hearthstone tournaments historically have been focused on individual players rather than teams, we felt that fantasy draft matches wouldn’t be as interesting as they could be until there was a team format.”
Another reason why the game wasn’t added sooner was due to how they would keep track of the stats and how exactly certain actions might translate into fantasy points. Whereas with other esports which have been team based from the start, this is the first team based league in Hearthstone which has been generally focusing on one player.
“For Hearthstone, for example, we incorporated mana usage as a unique stat that we might not track or consider for fantasy scoring in other games,” said Peterson.
AlphaDraft also announced a partnership with FACEIT and Beyond the Summit for Dota 2 in which they will provide support to the American Cup.
When asked about any other games they might add on Peterson had this to say,
“In roughly six months, we’ve gone from one game (League of Legends) to supporting five games: League of Legends, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, SMITE and now Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. We have plans to bring additional games on board, but it’s premature to talk about which games we will add next, nor a timetable for doing so.”
