The French Revolution. A time of social upheaval, fall of monarchies, rise of democracy, and of course: Public execution by guillotine. This is is the stage where the newest installment of the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Unity, will be taking place. Yesterday, a new trailer was released for Assassin’s Creed Unity that exposed gamers to many of the elements that will be encountered in the new game. The trailer opens with a guillotine dropping down while a clock ticks in the background. French soldiers are tossing decapitated victims on the ground while the new Assassin, Aron, races through crowds and under barriers towards the execution site. Aron finds himself right in the middle of a skirmish between French revolutionaries and soldiers. Keeping to Assassins Creed fashion, Aron avoids the skirmish by climbing a nearby wall until he reaches the top of the French building. From there, Aron traverses the French rooftops, racing towards where French citizens are losing their heads by guillotine. Aron stares at the mass of people gathered around the guillotine and realizes that he is running out of time. Aron pushes through the crowd, cutting down any French soldiers who cross his path. Aron leaps towards the French commander in charge of executions and assassinates him, while a new female presence looks upon the mighty assassin.
This female presence has been named Elise and as she and Aron stare down each other, it can be seen that she is wearing a Templar necklace. Aron draws his blade and appears to strike her down, keeping to every Assassin’s job of eradicating the Templar order. However, in a shocking turn of events, the screen opens back to see Aron and Elise back to back, swords drawn, awaiting to combat the large French military force coming their way. As the trailer ends, the word “Unite” flashes across the screen.
An Unlikely Alliance
This trailer poses a lot of questions to those that have followed the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Is this a point in the storyline where Assassins and Templar will actually unite to combat an even greater enemy that threatens both groups? Is Aron actually a part of the Templar order, despite wearing the clothes of the Assassin, similar to Edward Kenway for a brief period of time in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag? It is apparent that this title in the Assassin’s Creed franchise will be taking on a darker and more gruesome tone being set in a darker point in world history where war, death, betrayal, and uprising is abundant. It will be interesting to see how the new assassin, Aron, will be impacted by all of the chaos and death taking place around him, being part of an Order that forbids the slaughter of innocent civilians. All of these questions and more will be answered when Assassin’s Creed: Unity hits shelves on October 28, 2014 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
