Over the past few weeks Take Two and Rockstar have been faced with a whirlwind of backlash regarding their handling of the popular modding tool OpenIV. The controversy reached its peak earlier this month when Take Two issued a cease and desist letter to OpenIV demanding that the site immediately stop distribution of their mods. Of course this did not sit well with the Grand Theft Auto V (GTAV) PC gaming community, many of whom feel under attack by this decision and decided to fight back.
Following the shut down of OpenIV many outraged players took to the internet to make their position known. So far GTAV‘s reviews have gone from “overwhelmingly positive” to “overwhelmingly negative” on Steam in the past couple of weeks, and a Change.org petition has currently reached well over 70k signatures.
Rockstar, who has had a history of supporting modders of their games in the past, originally issued a statement that seemed to side with Take Two on the matter, but instead saying that their main target is modders of GTAV Online. However, feeling the pressure as their fans react, they have issued another statement seemingly taking a much softer approach than their partners at Take Two:
“Rockstar Games believes in reasonable fan creativity, and, in particular, wants creators to showcase their passion for our games,” “After discussions with Take-Two, Take-Two has agreed that it generally will not take legal action against third-party projects involving Rockstar’s PC games that are single-player, non-commercial, and respect the intellectual property (IP) rights of third parties. This does not apply to (i) multiplayer or online services; (ii) tools, files, libraries, or functions that could be used to impact multiplayer or online services, or (iii) use or importation of other IP (including other Rockstar IP) in the project.”
It is important to note that OpenIV is not intended for GTAV Online use nor to be used as a means of “cheating.” It is intended as a single player modding tool and has been around for 10 years. This is why most players were so outraged by Take Two’s actions.
As for now it seems single player mods and modders may be in the clear, but the statement issued from Rockstar does little to give a definitive answer on that.
