This past weekend was a huge one for receiving details about the single-player story campaign for WB Games’ upcoming Mortal Kombat X video game. Not only was a new trailer featuring a handful of returning characters, but the studios offered fans an early, first look at one of the many MKX Story mode chapters via live stream.
The latest story trailer, properly titled “The Cage Family”, gives fans a detailed look at newcomer Cassie Cage’s background and family lineage. That’s right folks: after the events of MK9, Johnny Cage & Sonya Blade got it on, and now, with MKX taking place a few decades later, has their offspring Cassie Cage leading a squad of black ops into the Netherrealm. Seemingly captured by the opposing faction, it looks like Johnny and Sonya enter the tournament once again in an attempt to set free Cassie and save Earthrealm from total annihilation . The trailer contains not only gameplay footage of all three Cage family members, but also offers a quick glimpse of possible returning, maybe playable characters, with the likes of Kenshi and Shinnok making cameo appearances throughout the trailer.

Then on Friday, following their surprise Friday the 13th Jason Voorhees announcement, some of the developers went in Twitch.TV and briefly discussed the newly revealed DLC via livestream, while also giving folks watching a first look at chapter one from Mortal Kombat X’s story campaign. The first chapter, “Johnny Cage”, features the ex-Hollywood star, along with his now ex-wife Sonya Blade and Kenshi as they race with a squad of Armed forces towards a potential confrontation with Shinnok, when they ar ambushed by Scorpion and Sub-Zero. FYI, in 2001’s Mortal Kombat, after Scorpion defeated and Killed Bi-Han (Sub-Zero 1), Quan-Chi manipulated his soul, making him a slave to his will, becoming “Noob”.. This seems to carry over into MKX with a now deathly, more darker Sub-Zero fighting opposite Earthrealm, with Johnny remorsefully saying “I missed when we fought on the same side”. Also, worth mentions is now the game takes advantage of QTE (Quick Time Event ala Shenmue) to advance certain elements of the story.
We also get an inside look at some of the motion capture work that went into creating some of the cinematic cut-scenes withing the story mode. The livestream then closes out with the devs revealing the different Johnny Cage gameplay variations and confirming rumored characters like Jade and now Mokap will not be returning to the roster in MKX.
Mortal Kombat X, developed by Netherrealm Studios & distributed by WB Games, is currently on-track for release via PS4, Xbox One and PC/ Steam on April 15th, 2015
