The Fall Nintendo Direct left everyone speechless with lots of surprise announcements. However, one of the smaller announcements evoked emotion in me for a reason that I’m sure many people could relate to. When Capcom Beat Em Up Bundle was announced with online play for Switch, I knew that my friend and I were about to rekindle a friendship torn apart by distance.
I, like many people, have formed several friendships through gaming. One of the most important bonds I ever formed was during my college years. I was working at a pizza restaurant and unlike the normal story of the people who hate their boss, my boss was my best friend.
We bonded over several things, but by far our favorite thing to do was play old school beat em ups. We had both just started collecting SNES games and became obsessed with classics like Knights of the Round, Captain Commando, Final Fight, and King of Dragons.
Every night after work we would go back to his place and, without fail, we’d stay up into the late hours of the night seeing how far we could make it with no continues. This lasted for a long time and got us through multiple steps of life. From him being the father of a child to myself newly married, we always found time to stay connected and support each other. This was all thanks to video games.
However, as time went on, so did life and when job opportunities came knocking, one of my best friends moved to the other side of the country. Life got busy and we both gained new responsibilities that made it hard for us to keep in touch. It also didn’t help that the one thing we loved most, classic beat em up style games, were mostly limited to local only play.
It grew hard watching my copies of Knights of the Round and Final Fight sit on the shelf collecting dust. Especially knowing that once these cartridges were the glue to such an important relationship in my life. So when I watched the Nintendo Direct today and saw all of our favorite beat em ups coming together in one bundle with online play, I couldn’t help getting a little emotional knowing that my friend and I may once again be able to relive some of those moments again despite being thousands of miles away.
Video games are more than toys that create a distraction from everyday life. At least for myself, they have been the catalyst for inspiration to do greater things and meet amazing people. That’s why I think it’s important in a time where we are overloaded with an abundance of new games, to remember how special games and the memories they create really are.
Capcom Beat Em Up Bundle will be available September 18th. The bundle will feature 7 classic Capcom arcade beat em ups. The list includes Final Fight, Knights of the Round, The King of Dragons, Captain Commando, Warriors of Fate, Armored Warriors, and Battle Circuit. This is the first time these game will feature online play, coinciding of course with Nintendo’s new online service. The games will also feature local co-op and the entire package will only retail for $19.99.
