A Cowboy Bebop live-action series is being developed by Tomorrow Studios (Snowpiercer) and they’re teamed up with Midnight Radio (Zoo) who will executive produce, along with Sunrise (the studio behind the original series); Tomorrow Studios’ Adelstein (Good Behavior, Prison Break) and Becky Clements (Good Behavior, Aquarius); as well as Matthew Weinberg. Chris Yost is said to pen the series (Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok)
Did you see that intro? Oh em gee! Cowboy Bebop is one of the best series ever. Cowboy Bebop follows a group of bounty hunters (cowboys) through space as they hunt and collect bounties; it is also the future, and their base is Jet’s spaceship called the Cowboy Bebop. Jet is a former policeman, Spike is a former member of a criminal organization, Faye is a kick ass female whose backstory I won’t ruin, Ed is an awesome young hacker, and Ein is a dog smarter than you and all your friends. We usually follow Spike, but everyone is important. Look, I’m not going to ruin the whole show just watch it, you won’t regret it.
Are they going to fuck this up? Oh yeah, it would be so easy to; so much stuff could go wrong from casting to writing, to the visuals, the music; so much stuff.
Screenwriter Chris Yost seems like an all right guy, Thor: Ragnarok seems to be coming out Milhouse so you never know, and he will have a team. I really hope they all binge watch the show before they start their own.
Sunset being an executive producer is a ray of hope since they did such an awesome job the first time around, they should really protect their intellectual property like a mama bear protects its cubs. At the end of the day Sunset is a corporation and corporations only really care about one thing ($$$); but corporations like this should know that they’re making all this bank thanks to the passion and dedication from their creative teams that make an awesome show causing people to like and ultimately buy into their product.
“We are excited to work with Sunrise in bringing this beloved anime to the U.S. and global marketplace as a live-action series,” said Adelstein to Deadline. “The animated version has long resonated with audiences worldwide, and with the continued, ever growing, popularity of anime, we believe a live action version will have an incredible impact today.”
See, what did I just say?
To be completely honest, I am actually excited for the news. I’m a big fan of the anime and getting a little more of a show that I love just feels like a good thing, even if they do end up fucking it up, you know? I will at least keep an eye out for more news and updates on this show, and will probably end up watching the series regardless (unless it’s so unbearably bad, of course). Though I am getting tired of people taking advantage of my nostalgia.
I will leave you now with some tweets from the fandom and give you a difference of opinion, enjoy.
