At D23, Disney’s largest expo for showing off their new attractions, as well as what new movies and shows they have upcoming, almost the full cast of The Avengers films, as well as members of The Guardians of the Galaxy, Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Tom Holland (Spider-Man) and Josh Brolin (Thanos) appeared. This was in an effort no doubt, to show just how packed full of heroes Avengers Infinity War plans on being, with there being a reported 67 characters in the film. Marvel has been building towards this finale for ten years. With this, Disney revealed some new footage from the upcoming film, although we haven’t gotten the trailer yet, there are some nice breakdowns of the footage to get your Marvel sense tingling over at Slashfilm.
The footage shown seems to indicate a much darker tone for the Marvel universe, showing images of Thanos holding Thor’s head, Thanos punching Iron Man, Thanos wielding the Infinity Gauntlet. Basically a lot of Thanos being the ultimate villain we’ve been waiting for to truly challenge the Avengers and company. The bigger question that still remains, is it possible to have this many characters and still create not only a cohesive film but a satisfying end to the current MCU run?
Marvel has been crafting an interwoven series of films for almost a decade now. Next year will be their 10 year anniversary for the MCU since the first Iron Man came out. This will coincide with the release of Avengers Infinity War which will include every major character from their past films. At this point, most of the major actor’s agreements are up with Marvel, allowing them to step away from characters they have now been playing for many years, across several movies. A big challenge for Marvel going forward is to not only create the blowout spectacular fans are expecting out of a movie this big, but to also set up what the next phase of Marvel movies is going to look like.
With new Marvel film series like Black Panther, the new Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and others in the works like Captain Marvel, there are plenty of heroes to fill the roles that might be left behind if we did not have the iterations of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and The Hulk we’ve become so accustomed to. Marvel has built a big bold universe that has not been seen before on the big screen. As much as it might be bitter sweet for those who have been there the whole time, the current formation of characters can’t last forever. The future might see Marvel resetting the universe, as often happens in the comics, or simply switching the mantles of certain heroes to newer characters. Giving the title of Captain America to either Winter Soldier or Falcon, or even completely new characters to become Iron Man or Thor, which the comic counterparts have also done.
Another possibility would be creating team up films for the newer heroes, having The Avengers be comprised of Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel etc. Something this big and intense has not really been attempted before, but if anyone can pull it off it’s probably Marvel. I remember thinking there was no way an Avengers film could work with so many characters. How wrong I was. Marvel has defied expectations time and time again. They’ve managed to create a universe of on screen characters that fans around the world wait with bated breath to see the conclusion of.
Whatever Marvel has in store for us, we’ll find out next year on May 4, 2018, when Avengers Infinity War releases.
