Do you love Castlevania? If so, you’ll probably be interested in Dark Flame, an indie game currently in development by Warren Smith. Described as a “Metroidvania Action-RPG”, this game is a 2-D sidescroller created as a throwback to early Castlevania titles. The game is very early in development, and very little about the story line is known. However, we do know that the protagonist will be Taharial, a warrior in the middle of the Baltic Crusades. After his brothers mysteriously go insane, he vows to find the cause, and sets forth to rid the area of evil before chaos overtakes the land.
As with many indie games Dark Flame is relying on crowdfunding to become a reality. The Kickstarter campaign for the game began on November 5th, 2015 and will be ending on December 6th, 2015. In Just two days people have already pledged more than two thousand dollars of the seventy five thousand dollar goal. Stretch Goal rewards are also listed, and reach all the way up to a whopping two hundred eighty thousand dollars. Backers will also receive social bonuses based on the number of likes or followers the game gets on different social media outlets.
Smith originally spent two and a half years developing this game on his own before deciding to recruit the help of a team of professionals. With the help of this team, improvements were made to the original demo, and a brand new, pre-alpha demo of Dark Flame was released along with the launch of the Kickstarter. This demo is a “polished” version of the one that Smith produced on his own, and features updated visuals, music, and sound effects.
The demo is available for anyone to download from www.darkflamegame.com. Though I usually don’t play Castlevania-style games, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. If the campaign is successful, the estimated release date of Dark Flame is October 2016.
