Friends, I must say, I’m at a loss for words. Last night, Devolver Digital of Hotline Miami and Serious Sam fame hosted their first E3 “press conference”. Why the quotation marks, you ask? Well, it was labeled a press conference, but it seemed to be…something else. What’s more, this “press conference” was a lead in for the Twitch night stream titled the “Pre-Pre-Show”. Let’s see if I can summarize this acid trip of a show…
The Devolver Press Conference
Truth be told, I would highly recommend anyone who hasn’t already seen it check out on the link above. In fact, from here on out, I’m going to assume you did, so go ahead and do that. I’ll wait.
Done? Ok, so if you watched the same conference as I, you saw that Devolver did not announce any new games that had not already been announced. But let’s be real: who cares?! The conference took two previously announced games, and dressed them up in 15 minutes of topical game gags. In an industry that leaves E3 asking the question “Who won E3?”, Devolver took a different direction entirely.
If Devolver’s conference wasn’t trippy enough for you, then what came after is what really got heads scratching. Almost 11 hours of content. Yes, you heard that right, 11 hours of constant content in which bizarre doesn’t even begin to describe it.
Wrestlers advertising their new movie while beating up the host? Guests live-reactions to mediocre shows? A naked man dancing before the unveiling of new gameplay of Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces? Man dressed up as a hamburger fighting a Power Ranger in a wrestling ring? Yes, the pre-pre-show had all this and much more! And yes, Devolver has a hand in producing this bizarre fest.
In the end, E3 shows come and go, and are remembered for what big announcements they unveil. But Devolver went into another category entirely, and left their mark in an entirely different way. I hope they do another one like this next year.
