When it comes to top-down action RPGs, the Diablo series has been the reigning king of the genre for quite a while. So it came as a nice surprise when Blizzard and Nintendo announced that a Diablo 3 Switch edition was not only in the works but would be available later this year and include Ganondorf as a playable character.
The announcement was made via a playful video on Nintendo’s YouTube channel featuring Reggie Fils-Aime and Mike Morhaime (CEO of Blizzard Entertainment). The announcement also features a short trailer for the game.
You can view the announcement here:
The Switch version of Diablo 3 is a port of the newly released Diablo 3 Eternal Collection, which came to other platforms earlier this year. The Eternal Collection is essentially a complete package featuring all of all of the games expansions and DLC.
Included in this package is the base game with all its content as well as the Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls expansion and the Rise of the Necromancer DLC. Anyone who has previously experienced Diablo 3 can tell you that that is quite a hefty amount of content.
But hands down the best part of the announcement was the surprise Switch exclusive character Ganondorf, from the Legend of Zelda series. That’s right, Switch owners will be able to play as Ganondorf exclusively as well as receive a triforce ring and a Cucco.
Diablo 3 Eternal Collection for the Nintendo Switch has a launch window of 2018, but an exact release date has not been given. It is a massive success for Nintendo to have received third-party support from Blizzard. Blizzard is one of the biggest names in gaming with a legacy of games such as Overwatch, World of Warcraft, and Starcraft under their belt.
Diablo 3 was originally released as a PC exclusive game in 2012. One year later it received console ports on both PS3 and Xbox 360. This marked the first time a Diablo game had ever come to consoles since the first game appeared on PS1 in 1998. The game was a great success with console audiences and was eventually ported to PS4 and Xbox One with the Reaper of Souls expansion.
For those uninitiated to the series, Diablo 3 is an action RPG with a top-down perspective. Players can choose a character from several class varieties that each have their own unique style of play.
Randomly generated dungeons and loot drops make Diablo 3 extremely replayable even after finishing the campaign for the first time. Most of the fun comes from online and local multiplayer where up to 4 players can team up to find epic treasures and battle giant bosses.
