Loot boxes seem to have found their way into one of the first major releases of the year with Dragon Ball FighterZ. This time they’re taking the form of Z Capsules that players can spend two different types of in-game currency on that will grant access to cosmetic items used to customize your fighters as well as your lobby avatar.
This was discovered by fans with early copies of the game, showing off the ability to purchase Z Capsules with Zeni. Zeni is seemingly the game’s main currency that players earn when completing battles and various modes in the game. The other currency type is Premium Z Coins which are earned when trading in duplicate items from Z Capsules. The amounts that are granted per battle, mode or duplicate remain a mystery until the game launches this Friday, January the 26th.
Having two major currencies sure seems like the Premium Z Coin is going to be a purchasable item in the form of a micro-transaction. This has not been confirmed either, but looks to be very similar to what other games have done like Injustice 2‘s crystals and COD’s points.
2017 was the year of the loot box rearing its’ ugly head with it becoming a staple in a large number of major releases and leading to the controversy surrounding certain titles like Star Wars Battlefront 2. It’s possible these uproars in the gaming community have lead Bandai Namco to hold back from publicly stating that Dragon Ball FighterZ would have loot boxes or any type of micro-transaction.
From the recent Beta and the time I spent with the game at last year’s E3, Dragon Ball FighterZ might just strike the perfect sweet spot between accessible, but deep under the surface. This is not to mention the game’s amazing visual style and attention to detail including classic scenes from the anime. Dragon Ball FighterZ holds a lot of promise for fighting game fans and Dragon Ball fans. Here’s hoping loot box and micro-transaction nonsense doesn’t get in the way of that.
We’ll find out this Friday the 26th when Dragon Ball FighterZ launches for PS4, PC and Xbox One.
