Nintendo held their E3 direct today and it packed quite a punch with plenty of surprise announcements. However, it was what we expected to see that might have blown our minds even more. Super Mario Odyssey is officially one of the most impressive games that has been shown at this years conference and unlike so many games shown at E3 we have a release date. This October 27th you will be able to play Mario Odyssey on Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo ended their conference with a lengthy Super Mario Odyssey trailer that combined a mix of cut-scenes and game play. However, it wasn’t clear that the trailer was for Mario considering it opened with a giant T-Rex. Even more bizarre than this is that Mario’s new power allows him to throw Cappy (his new hat companion with eyes) onto enemies and become them. Yes, Mario can become a Goomba, a Bullet Bill, a Hammer Bro, and even a T-Rex and a Taxi Cab. Yes, you read that right this is going to be one crazy Mario game.
We were shown several open air environments that will let you take advantage of Mario’s new abilities. Becoming Bullet Bill will let you fly between platforms and Mario can even travel through the power lines as a electric ball. While the worlds so look separated in some way that was not yet revealed, it does look like you will be able to tackle the world’s challenges in any way you choose. This could lead to some crazy water cooler moments much like this years hit Zelda Breath of the Wild.
Besides Mario’s awesome new ability we were given a glimpse also at how collectibles will work in this game as well. Game play on the Nintendo Treehouse presentation revealed that coins are no longer useless collectibles. Instead they can now be used to buy new costumes and items for Mario. And there were lots of clothing options shown all the way from a sombrero to a football outfit. Some of these outfits even give Mario special abilities to interact with the different worlds and complete challenges.
While the game looks to borrow a lot of its game play style from Mario 64 later footage did show some different ways to play as well. By playing with the disconnected joy-con controllers you can shake the controller to attack much like Super Mario Galaxy. The controls did get an update that allows you to also move the joy-con to control where you throw Cappy and what direction he will go. In a very Zelda A Link Between Worlds fashion it looks like Mario will be able to fuse into walls and turn the platforming into a more NES style 8-bit Mario.
The story of this game still remains a bit of a mystery. All we know is that there seems to be some kind of wedding between Bowser and Peach and Mario’s goal is to stop it. Story has never been the forefront of any Mario game so it will be a surprise if the story is any more in depth than that, but who knows this game looks like it is full of new landmarks for the series.
The final reveal for this game is the new amiibos that will be released alongside it. There are three that were shown and they are sure to catch the eyes of any Nintendo fan out there. The three amiibo feature Mario, Bowser, and Peach all sporting their proper wedding attire.
All in all this game looks amazing and I cannot wait to get my hands on it. Being able to have a new Mario game this big on the go will be awesome and I know I am not the only one who feels this way.
