There is so much to talk about with the release of the new trailer from E3 and all of the news being put out by PlanetDestiny, so let’s get started shall we?
The new story is about the Hive God Oryx, father to Urrox and Crota. Oryx is said to be born of pure darkness, in pure darkness, and he is furious that we killed his children. Both Crota and Urrox were worthy foes, Urrox being able to ignite the entire area around himself, and the sword-slinging Crota who escaped death previously by having his soul placed into a large crystal. With his own sword, we guardians destroyed Crota, once and for all, but now his father is coming for us all!
Oryx cares not for who gets in his way, all will perish that stand between him and the Guardians. The story starts on Phobos, a moon of Mars, where the guardians have been sent after a Cabal distress signal was intercepted by the tower. Upon reaching the destination of the signal it becomes clear that these Cabal aren’t invading, but rather they are running for their lives. Oryx is able to kill them then reanimate them with one mindset, “Obey Oryx”. After being reanimated in darkness they gain new abilities, being able to split themselves into a clone, or to being able to blink a certain distance in a direction. Luke Smith, the Creative Director for this expansion, said “One of the design goals for the Taken was to make the alien races of destiny feel even more alien.” Along with this they have added a twitch to their animation to add a sense of their will being taken from them. We’ll be taking the fight to him at his dreadnaught, his “castle in the sky”. However, as we are now, we aren’t strong enough to fight the Taken King, so we must look to the forgotten ways of our predecessors. Yes, this means a third subclass.
Sunbreakers, Stormcallers, and Nightstalkers. Now, I must admit to “fanboying” over a new subclass, I was way too excited, but I was still worried that it wouldn’t live up to the hype. Also admitting, I have done a lot of research into these new subclasses, and let me just say, the the subclass matches the hype, and maybe exceeds it. After looking into the new abilities, grenades, and melee augments, there is so much being added, and with 3 months to go, it can all be changed.
Sunbreaker is the new Titan subclass with the abilitiy Hammer of Sol. That’s right, The Taken King will be giving Titans a melee weapon, and not just any weapon, but a hammer that can only be described as a Mjolnir that was forged in the flames of Hell’s sun. This hammer acts like the Bladedancer’s Arc Blade, “But Wait! There’s More!”, this hammer, like Thor’s Mjolnir, can be thrown at enemies. However, this hammer is quite heavy so it is being lobbed, but there is a perk in this subclass to make it steer towards enemies. Additionally, there is a perk for those who just want to hit things, one that fills the hit target with solar energy until he explodes in a tight combustion that ignites enemies around them. This new Titan subclass looks insane to play as, and I predict a large number of Titans making this their main subclass, I know I will.
Have you ever wanted to be a phantom menace, telling your young disciple to use his anger to strike down his enemies? If that be the case, look into the warlock’s new subclass, the Stormcaller; able to call a localized lightning storm to a desired location, or to levitate around the map whilst imbued with the energy of a thousand lightning bolts., the Stormcaller decimates his enemies at every turn. His new super allows him to levitate, and chain lightning from his fingertips through his enemies wiping out entire teams if they dare stand against him. While his super is active he receives less damage, making him able to take a beating before being taken out. This gives him the edge he desires in order to get that triple down, or multikill. Stormcallers are coming to the crucible, and we all better bring our best.
Nightstalkers are what I wanted the Hunter class to be from the get-go. In every other game ever, a Hunter uses his ranged technique and is usually a sharpshooter with either a rifle of bow. Now, The Taken King is dropping us a void infused bow that we’ve all been waiting for. Now read carefully, this new super is going to sound way too lame to even touch at first, but when I explain further you’ll see why it’s my new favorite super ability, and even subclass in general. Okay, bearing that in mind, The void bow is a bit difficult to aim at first because it will pull you out into a third-person point of view, as with the Warlock Nova Bomb, but this fires straight and both tethers enemies and suppresses them. That means, these guardians, or aliens, will be anchored down to where this bow shoots, slowing them massively and bringing on the suppression mentioned earlier. The before mentioned suppression locks the tethered enemies’ abilities down. They can’t throw a grenade, they can’t use a melee augment, they cant super, heck they can hardly jump. Furthermore, if an enemy is tethered while their super ability is active, it gets shut down as well. Also, the new subclass does NOT come with a melee augment, rather you gain a smokescreen that you can toss for a narrow escape. Overall, this new subclass is my favorite and what looks to be made specifically for the new PvP game modes.
Speaking of new PvP game modes, there are two action-packed, teeth grindingly focused game types coming to Destiny that will tether your eyes to your television. Now, lets clear something up, these are NEW game modes, not just an old game mode with new maps, NEW Game Types, NEW Maps, NEW Experiences! The Taken King expansion is bringing forth our first new crucible variation, Mayhem. This is not a misnomer for sure, this game type is Bungie wanting to see how chaotic a Team Deathmatch game mode will be when all the abilities will have super fast cooldowns. That’s where the Nightstalker bow comes in to keep these supers from being unleashed. The other new game type is most similar to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s game mode Uplink. This new game mode is called Rift and there is a single “ball” that needs to be taken to the “belly of the beast”, the enemy base and then scored in a “hoop”, or rift. It’s a lot like basketball… with guns. They even went as far as giving style points to those who score backwards, giving the scoring guardian the animation of doing a back flip whilst scoring. This is to be Bungie’s solution to a Capture the Flag game mode.
There is so much to Destiny’s newest expansion. The Taken King will bring gamers everything they’ve wanted and more! New Supers, new Maps, new Destinations, new subclasses. Also coming out with The Taken King, is a special promotion with Red Bull, if you buy a specially marked Six Pack you will receive a new mission and shader. Basically, if you can name it, The Taken King will probably have it. Yes, even new emotes. “When you see these new emotes, you will throw your money at the screen” – Luke Smith.
