Paper Mario: Color Splash is coming out for the Wii U and Nintendo showcased a brilliant new trailer for the game, including new story details and a short playthrough of the opening showcased during the Treehouse Live event. If you’re a big fan of the series I’ve got to say this entry is looking like the most diverse one yet!
First things first, lets get the story details. The game opens with two hooded figures walking towards Mario’s cabin, but don’t worry it’s just Peach and Toad with an alarming piece of mail for Mario. He opens the letter and out pops a blank toad, absolutely no colour and as plain as winter’s snow which of course is worrying for our Mushroom Kingdom friends. This sets you off on your adventures to Prism Island where you find it all looking a little duller and more disheveled than usual. You also meet your tin-can friend in the form of Huey! He is pretty much a talking can of paint and will be your companion along the journey, as the Paper Mario series usually do pretty well on this front, you can expect lots of wit and humour. Check out the trailer below.
I can’t help but feel some nostalgic vibes towards Super Mario Sunshine when I watched it, with the help of Huey you’ll be coloring in the land and rescuing various inhabitants in bringing their life back to color. The battle system this time around uses cards to determine if you’ll jump on an enemy or use your hammer, amongst other things, and you can still get extra hits in based upon the timing of your button presses. Some areas will also require you to trace around the outline of a shape on the gamepad to determine new routes and progress, altering the environments has always been a great part of the series and Color Splash looks like it’ll be keeping that tradition!
If you want to watch more gameplay footage then check out the Treehouse Live coverage they did below. One thing I have noticed is how authentic the card and paper look with the environments and characters so the Wii U has definitely given the game a fresh layer of paint.
