Rumors surrounding Bethesda’s series, Fallout, have been circling ever since gamers were nearing the end of their adventure in the Mojave Wasteland from New Vegas. While no one can blame a fan for hoping and yearning for a new trip to The Wastes, it may be time for some guarded optimism, not to mention a lot of patience.
Twitter and reddit seem to be the main rumor mills in today’s age, and the official Fallout reddit has banned all rumors surrounding a new Fallout unless there is some hard proof to back the claim. With E3 and Gamescon come and gone, there was still no official announcement of production on a new Fallout installment from Bethesda. But, the last person to blow the whistle, on possibly one of the most anticipated game of the past few years, was a reddit user who claims to be friends with someone in Bethesda’s PR department. This person says their friend confirmed production, locale, and a rough release for the fall of 2015. Admittedly, some of the rumors are antagonizingly fun to imagine being true. Some of the more recent whispers were of a Boston locale and a lesser focus on Super Mutants with a shift towards a more robotic and android centered story. Others included a new leveling system more in line with the one seen in Skyrim.
Yet amidst the speculated new features, some discrepancies arose. The source claimed the new title would shift more towards a “retro-futuristic” vibe. If this has you saying, “How is that a shift?”, you’re not alone. Lines like that were the major red flags that made this round of rumors too good to be true.
Bethesda has since debunked all rumors from the beginning and this time was no exception. That just leaves us with the question ” where to go from here? ” It’s been nearly six years since the release of Fallout 3 and almost four years since New Vegas. At most, we have over a four-year wait between Fallout games, but if it is indeed a follow-up to the story of the Vault-Dweller then seven years plus seems like the bar we’re reaching for.
All is not lost for my fellow explorers, raiders, saviors and wanderers. Bethesda was extremely excited about the PC version of Skyrim and that’s due to the PC community. with the amount of mods created to extend the replay value even further, and with the next gen consoles being more PC-like than ever before, it’s probably safe to expect great things when the next vault opens.
