After a few days of counting down to something big, the first official teaser for the Fullmetal Alchemist live-action adaption is here. I am hesitantly fan-girling.
Yes, it may be late for news stories here in America, but I am a super fan of Fullmetal Alchemist. Like, I have 13 FMA tattoos because I love this series so much! So when I heard the news that there was going to be a live-action movie, I was skeptical. For years, video game fans have seen horrible remakes of beloved games. And we’ve seen it happen with anime now a few times. Remember The Last Airbender? Yikes…So naturally I want this movie to be good, but my glass was half empty.
Until I watched the teaser. I, having 0% knowledge of Japanese, haven’t been able to read what the heck is going on, but the imagery speaks for itself.
For anyone who is not familiar with Fullmetal Alchemist, it’s a story about two young boys who lose their mother at a young age. As practicing alchemists, they feel that they may have the ability to bring her back to life. However, the attempt fails, and both lose parts of their bodies as the price for trying to bring her back. Wanting to restore what they’ve lost, the two decide to join the State Alchemists, a branch of the military that would give them access to research normal civilians aren’t allowed to see.
For fans of the series, can we just appreciate the art style? First, Alphonse looks SO amazing! The transmutation circles (for newcomers, how alchemists channel their power to perform alchemy), A++. Plot aside, because this story has been told many different ways, I’m very proud of what I see so far. Even the chimera, which doesn’t match the anime at all, looks more horrific and terrifying than anything that Father…well, okay, I can’t spoil it now. But take it from a long time FMA fan, the movie looks stunning so far.
Are you excited? At the possibility that we may just be looking at some good live-action movies based off anime? Or are you cautious? I won’t blame you. We are in this together.
