Spiderman is not a new character. And we’ve known that Homecoming was going to happen for some time. But the trailer is here. And it is a dorky piece of art.
Tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Sony and Marvel Studios have released the first real look at Spiderman: Homecoming. And I’m in love. Despite the war for Spiderman that happened while Marvel Studios was working on The Avengers franchise (Sony owns the rights to Spiderman, not Marvel fyi), it seems that the two companies have finally settled their beef, at least for now, to bring us a new telling of Peter Parker’s beginnings.
With new villians we haven’t seen in the film franchise, aka The Vulture, a new love interest, and Tom Holland completely pulling off the awkward high school kid vibe, I couldn’t be more excited. Oh! And there is also quite a bit of Robert Downey Jr. Could this film get any better?!
Although not confirmed on any site that I see, so bare that in mind, the trailer shows us a Peter Parker who, once again, is just starting his wannabe superhero career. We have a concerned Tony Stark mentoring Parker through this journey. But the talk of leaving the superhero work to the adults quickly loses its message. Of course it does. This is Peter “God Damn” Parker we’re talking about. He’s not gunna stay in his room and study. He’s going to bust out his brand new suit, kick some bad guy butt, then show up in school and probably fail. It’s okay though, we’ll always love him all the same. Cute little, sarcastic, web-slinger.
But does an interesting trailer make a good movie? We’ll have to wait and see, unfortunately. The newest take on the recycled story doesn’t hit theaters until July 7th of 2017. I guess I’ll just have to keep re-watching the trailer over and over with the same puppy-eyes Peter has for Liz.
