With the Friday the 13th franchise in the midst of a legal battle, the co-creator of Friday the 13th: The Game, has come forward with sad news for players of the horror-themed survival title.
Friday the 13th: The Game will be receiving no new DLC content for the foreseeable future.
For those unfamiliar with the legal battle creating this issue, the screenwriter for the original Friday the 13th movie Victor Miller wrote the original story for the 1980’s film. Miller is credited for creating the characters for the sequels as well. Miller is looking to reclaim ownership of the franchise and terminate a grant of rights. The company Horror Inc claims that Miller was a work-for-hire writer and therefore cannot gain ownership and terminate a rights grant.
The outcome of this lawsuit will determine who holds the rights and who can license further content from the Friday the 13th series. It turns out that Friday the 13th: The Game falls under this dispute, meaning that no more content from the series and no new content can come from the game until the dispute is solved. The game creators at Gun Media have now been forced to cancel all planned DLC.
Co-creator Wes Keltner had this to say to fans of the game to clarify the current situation:
“Development on games can’t just pause indefinitely and pick back up again; it doesn’t work that way. Especially when you have no idea when that future date will occur. We can’t keep building content that may never see the light of day. That’s bad business. I’ve also had questions about adding “non-F13” related content to the game. “Can’t you make a new level or a new counselor that has nothing to do with the films?” We can’t do that either. We can’t add any content, whatsoever. Nada. Not even a new tree or rock. We can only focus on console dedicated servers, bug fixes, and maintenance.”
Though it’s sad, it makes sense. There’s no real point in creating content that could “never see the light of day” and the best thing they can do in this situation is work on making the game the best it can be, without being able to add any extra content.
