Possibly one of the biggest games of the year, God of War, releases this weekend. And while everyone is eager to get their hands on it, the God of War director Cory Barlog is eager and anxious to see what people think. In fact he even uploaded a video of his reaction online and it might just make you cry tears of happiness for him.
Cory opens the video nervously claiming that he has his ax to keep him comforted from any bad reviews. Little does he know that the reviews will be overwhelmingly positive. Part of Cory’s nerves probably came from the fact that this is a completely new God of War experience. While the character of Kratos obviously carries over from previous titles, the mythology is completely new as well as some of the game play elements.
When Cory finally stops stalling and looks at the reviews the first words out of his mouth are, “holy shit!” His emotions immediately overtake him in what looks like a combination of joy and relief. At the time of filming his reaction, the God of War Metacritic score was 94, however it has since jumped up to a 95.
Cory’s reaction really does serve as a great reminder that there are actual people behind the video games we play. Something that many people have taken for granted when it comes to the video game industry. Barlog went onto explain his reaction to the reviews by saying, “it shouldn’t matter, but I’m just so fucking proud.”
Balrog later explained that he wasn’t going to upload his reaction, but his reason for doing so makes it all the better. “So, I thought a lot about whether or not to upload but then I thought of what my son, Helo, is going through right now. He doesn’t want us to be around when he is sad, opting to run in another room and yell at us if we try to come in. It has been important to us to let him know that it is OK to be sad, it is OK to cry. There is nothing to hide. I thought I would try to set a good example and show him that papa can cry in front of the world, or at least the 50 people who end up watching this. 🙂 This is for you, Helo. Papa loves you.”
We are very happy for Barlog’s accomplishment and much like many of you, we can’t wait to play his achievement on our PlayStations this weekend.
