Another year has come to an end and with another year-end comes another battle for Game of the Year. My pick for Game of the Year is Doki Doki Literature Club.
Story – Doki Doki Literature Club is about a guy who promised his best friend that he’d join a school club during this year so that he could make friends and not be socially awkward after high school. There are four main characters in the game, excluding you. There’s your carefree best friend Sayori, the shy girl who always has her face in a book Yuri, the short girl with an attitude Natsuki, and the smart and beautiful Monika. One full playthrough of Doki Doki Literature Club normally lasts around four-five hours. The story is where the game really shines. It starts out as a cute visual novel/dating sim but you quickly find that hidden under all that cuteness is a dark story that is not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed.
Gameplay – Doki Doki Literature Club is a visual novel with your basic kawaii anime
girls. The gameplay doesn’t do anything that breaks the mold or blows your mind. You make poems throughout the game by using words you think one of the club members might like to try to win them over. Other than the poem making there aren’t many other choices that you can make.
Opinion – Personally I think Doki Doki Literature Club is easily one of the best games of 2017 and it’s my Game of the Year. It’s a game that can make you feel love for its characters. A game with a story that breaks the mold. Team Salvato made a truly amazing game that everyone should play.
