It’s no secret that Persona 5 stole my heart this year. It was April 4th, 2017, a Tuesday. I sat waiting for my mailman to deliver what would be the game that would change my expectations for what a JRPG would be. I popped the title into my PS4 at around 4 pm, and my life was forever changed. Not many games have that something special that transcends gaming and makes it an experience. Persona 5 has it, and that’s why it’s my choice for Game of the Year.
You can check out my full review of Persona 5 where I go into detail as to just what makes the game so great. In the shortest terms though, Persona 5 is a game that was built with love, and that’s easy to tell from the moment you begin playing it.
It’s the attention to detail that can’t be ignored when playing the game. One of the reasons (I believe) it was robbed for Best Art Direction at the Video Game Awards 2017. Each character cut-in, each menu animation, having the characters hold cards with their health and SP when it’s their turn during combat. All of these little things come together to create perfect parts for a full package. Add to that the story, addictive and fast gameplay, and an amazing and catchy soundtrack and you’ve got the makings for a perfect game.
While the PS4 celebrated a ton of amazing titles for 2017, and the Switch and the Xbox had some amazing titles released, none of them quite stood out as much as Persona 5. Horizon Zero Dawn was unique, Neir Automata had amazing gameplay, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild created a new experience for Nintendo fans, but they were all missing that personal connection. Persona 5 has character, more so than any other game released this year. You become quickly invested in the lives of these Phantom Thieves, and that connection is what makes Persona stand out from the competition. The Phantom Thieves have stolen my heart and deserve Game of the Year, have they stolen yours?
