With all the Battle Royale style games coming out, some with new ideas, others just being a cash grab, it can be easy to overlook one of the founding platforms of the genre. H1Z1 has brought us a new mode, and it might have saved them from being irrelevant. Is H1Z1 Auto Royale the next big thing?
Oversaturation Leads to Innovation.
It’s safe to say that there are a lot, maybe too many, Battle Royale style games. With the phenomenon of Player Unkown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite, the world has become obsessed with the Hunger Games like mode. Just like the superhero movie trend, it seems like too much of a good thing. Nothing particularly bad, but nothing new really. Fornite was the first light-hearted take on the game mode. It was fun, nothing too serious, and the art style helped that. And currently, Fornite has passed PUBG on Twitch as the most watched game.
The New/Old Kid on the Block.
I know what you’re thinking,”The title said something about H1Z1.” I’m getting there. Many people don’t know that Player Unknown made the popular mod back on Arma games and eventually H1Z1. King of the Kill kicked off the whole battle royale popularity. Player Unkown eventually went off and made the mode into a full-length game, that became extremely successful. H1Z1 clearly not wanting to be left and forgotten, developed Auto Royale. Pretty much a car battle royale mode, they hope will bring them back in the conversation.
What is Auto Royale?
Auto Royale is the latest game mode added to H1Z1 in their series of recent updates to keep up with the juggernauts of the genre. It is pretty similar to any other battle royale game with one minor detail, complete vehicular mayhem. Teams of 4 are placed into a vehicle and must collect power-ups and health to stay alive and fighting. Power-ups include ammo, weapons, and armor for the passengers. They also provide repair kits, oil slicks, and smoke screens for the driver to use. Teams must use what they can find to eliminate other teams and come out on top. You can play solo, duo, trio and still be placed on a team with a random so teams are always numerically even. But communication is strongly recommended, so get out of your party chat and into the game chat!
Pros, Cons, and Overall.
So far my only big complaint can’t be justified with the game still in beta, and that’s the server issues. Usually, 3 out of 5 games are fine, but those other 2 games are terribly laggy and plagued with frame-rate drops. Other than that, Auto Royale is an absolute blast! Sometimes the action is hard to find, but that’s all depending on your strategy. This is one of the most fun games I’ve played in a while and I cannot wait for more updates on the mode. Everyone who has H1Z1 go check it out! They’ve made more updates to the standard Battle Royale mode that improve the experience, but the Auto Royale mode is where you wanna be. It’s definitely something new and refreshing. For fans of the older Twisted Metal, I strongly recommend it. No, it’s not twisted metal, but in the later game, it feels like it. It is a must try. Be sure to check back for more updates and news about Auto Royale and other games and modes!
