WTF is up gamers! Ever wondered what it would be like if everyone suddenly attained the power to time travel? Who would moderate all the craziness that would ensue when people started messing with the past? Well so did Robert Wolinsky and with The AA Squad, his upcoming comic about a team of misfit time officers and their adventure to save the universe, he is hoping to finally bring that vision to life but he needs your help!
What’s The Story?
In the year 3000, the newest innovation for humans, the Time Mat burst into the scene! The Time Mat allowed its users to skip forward in time in small increments. People no longer waited for their hot pockets to cook or sat through annoying television ads they never cared for. Because of this the advertising business took a hit. Television advertising was no longer profitable and many lost their jobs. One specific Cable Television Provider Employee had it out for Time Mat and decided to do the unthinkable, he hacked the Time Mat and released the hack into the world. This new version of the Time Mat allowed users to not only skip forward in time, but also backwards.
To combat the severe backlash from the hack, the government organized the Time Correction Organization. The TCO has 27 different departments ranging from A-Z, including the lowest ranking department, AA. The AA Squad deals with fluctuations in time of the least importance, but they soon discover that their missions contain more significance than they could have ever imagined.
Flash forward to the year 3001 where this story takes place. It has been one year since the terrible Time Mat hack that allowed users to go back in time. TCO has been constantly hard at work to contain many of the fluctuations that could have had catastrophic results, but one manages to slip past them. A fluctuation so small that only The AA Squad manage to escape back in time before it completely envelops the universe and destroys the space time continuum.
Now it us up to these four agents to save the universe and restore the timeline. Follow this group as they go from zeroes to heroes, traveling through space and time, fixing yesterday’s problems today for a better tomorrow.
Meet the Creator
Rob Wolinsky, the writer and creator of AA Squad, decided that he was going to bring this idea into fruition a few months ago. “I love comic books and one day I just decided that main stream comics were all “blehhhh” to me and I wanted to write stories that I would want to read. As I put it in my Kickstarter campaign, “One day I decided I wanted to write comics, so I did”.”
This seems like a great idea and one that we’d love to see more of, so we decided to ask Wolinsky some questions regarding his new comic.
How did you decide who would be on your team and why?
“My team choices were very important to me. Chunlin Zhao, my artist, was an easy first pick. I always enjoyed a more cartoony style in my comics (I blame years of binging Adventure Time) and Chunlin was a perfect fit for my brain right off the get go.
Jamie Me was someone I’ve dealt with a lot in the past. I’ve reviewed some of his comics and we grew pretty friendly over the last year or so. I always liked his lettering style in his books and he was another easy choice!
Lastly is my editor, Matthew Robinson. Me and Matt have been friends for years. No matter the scenario, Matt has always been my editor. From letters to companies, articles I’ve written, and of course my comics, Matt has always been the first person I turn to for help with words. Him and I are working on two other comics that are in the works, look out for them next year!”
How did you come up for the idea/concept of AA Squad?
A friend and myself had the idea of making the comic a few years back. The idea was that a team of D-list heroes would go back in time to fix things that nobody really cared about. He was lazy and I actually wanted to accomplish something, so we went our separate ways and I toned up the idea making it a unique mix of action, adventure, and comedy. Shout outs to Alex Sark, my lazy friend, for helping with the concept.
What makes your comic book different from others?
This isn’t your typical time travel story. Everything that happens has a purpose and things just don’t “get fixed” or “go back to normal” after each mission. There’s a lot of twists and turns and I genuinely believe that you won’t see them coming. Also! All of their time travel ventures are actual historical events. In issue one the team travels back to the 1890’s to the showing of the first ever movie. My history buffs will get a kick out of this book as well.
AA Squad promises to bring something new to the time traveling formula. Time traveling mats, unemployed villains, and nostalgic trips through history?! AA Squad promises to take its readers on an insane joy ride through time.
