A long-lasting rumor that has been circulating is that a MercurySteam, the studio behind Konami’s Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series, has been trying to pitch a new addition the the Metroid series to Nintendo. It has been confirmed that this is true, and for more details read more!
MercurySteam began trying to expand their staff in May in preparation for their new game. MercurySteam was hoping to hire as many talented new developers from other industries in order to begin their proposal. It is true that a prototype was developed earlier this year, and it was to be created for both the Wii U and the 3DS. Within the company, it was referred to simply as “Metroid,” and was described as a first person game set in a post-apocalyptic, science-fiction environment. In MercurySteam’s demo, the main playable character was Samus, as per usual, but she was joined by 7 other playable bounty hunters similar to the setup of the 3DS game: Metroid Prime: Hunters.
The current status of the pitch is unknown, but rumor is that Nintendo turned it down, and more details from MercurySteam point away from any hope for it. MercurySteam updated their website to have a picture of a man in a cockpit and some text that reads, “>Status: Exploring new worlds, fighting strange creatures, discovering new heroes. Expect news soon.” It is unknown if this has any connection to Metroid or not, but it does share the same ideals. It is possible that the project had a back-up plan of becoming an Original IP and following the same lines that the Metroid game would have. This back up would’ve been made for the event of the Metroid pitch being rejected.
We await more news on the matter, but as of now I am personally on the edge of my seat waiting to see what news will come out of this. I personally think that the rumor of the declined pitch is true, and that the back up project was brought forth. I want to see more, and even if it is a brand new IP, I’m still excited to see what will come of it. When more news arises you can expect to find it here!
