Microsoft has apparently filed to trademark the term “Battletoads” earlier last week on November 5th, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office, fueling rumors that the video game property may witness a potential resurgence on Microsoft’s Xbox platform.
The original Battletoads, which made it’s debut on Nintendo’s original 8-Bit NES console in 1991, centers around three humanoid toads, one of which is kidnapped alongside a galactic space princess, forcing the remaining two ‘battletoads’ (depending on your character select options) to rescue both the damsel in distress, as well as their fallen comrade. The popular 8-bit beat-em-up was later followed up by the 1993 sequel Battletoads in Battlemaniacs, which was released via the Super Nintendo (and later ported to the Sega Master System exclusively in Brazil). A Battletoads / Double Dragon crossover dubbed The Ultimate Team followed for NES, SNES, Sega Genesis/ Mega Drive & Game Boy.
The last title in the franchise to be released was the arcade release of Battletoads (aka Super Battletoads) 20 years ago, in 1994. Although there is nothing that currently states as to if, when and to which Microsoft platform the trademark tends on applying towards, the USPTO does identify the trademark is intended as a title for “game software,” and more specifically “entertainment services, namely, providing online video games,” once more fueling the idea that Battletoads may come exclusively to the Xbox platform(s) in the very near future.
