I can’t even start this article without going there. It happened. Super Smash Bros is coming to the Switch. Officially. That and about a bazillion other announcements were amongst today’s mammoth Nintendo Direct so sit back and grab yourself a snack as I run down the main headlines.
They started today’s Nintendo Direct with the 3DS headlines so that is where we’ll begin.
WarioWare Gold is a new entry to the series which will bring over 300+ mini-games in one package to the 3DS, promising some classics from the older titles and also adding new games into the mix. It will be launching August 3rd 2018.
Dillons Dead-Heat Breakers
This is a title that is technically a spin off from quite an old eShop game, Dillon’s Rolling Western was released in 2012 and it saw you playing as an armadillo in a tower-defense style game. Fast forward 6 years and he’s back, from the trailer above it looks to be a lot more action focused and includes Mii functionality. A demo of the game will launch on May 10th with the full game releasing on May 24th 2018.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story & Bowser Jr’s Journey
That’s right, there’s another remake of another Mario & Luigi game. Following on from last years Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga & Bowser’s Minions they’re now going to release Mario & Luigi: Bowsers’ Inside Story & Bowser Jr’s Journey for 3DS. That’s one heck of a mouthful. It’s a remake of the DS original and will also feature a brand new story where you play as Bowser Jr, something to keep the old fans happy! It will be released in 2019.
Luigi’s Mansion has become somewhat of a cult classic, it took them so long to make a sequel and then when it came out on the 3DS in 2013 a lot of new fans had not played the original which was released for Gamecube back in 2001! So now you’ll be glad to hear that a remake is coming out for the 3DS and it’s releasing this year. It didn’t look like there were many new features for this one but I have held a soft spot for Luigi for a long while now so I’ll no doubt be picking this one up.
They did also mention Detective Pikachu which is releasing on March 24th but there was no new information really, a Detective Pikachu amiibo is also launching along side the game which is a little bit larger than usual.
Now onto the Switch headlines, I hope you’re ready for this lot because there’s a ton of new games (and a few surprises) thrown in for good measure. It’s never been a better time to own a Switch!
Kirby Star Allies
Kirby Star Allies is released on March 16th and you can watch the new trailer above which showcases a few familiar faces with whom you can join forces with in the game. A free update will be made available on March 28th which will add Rick, Kine and Coo from Kirby’s Dream Land 2. Further updates were promised as well so I’m sure there’ll be other Kirby characters popping by.
Okami has now had multiple releases and re-releases over the years, but I am ecstatic to see Okami HD getting released on the Switch as it truly is a masterpiece. If you haven’t played it yet, I can’t think of anything better than carrying around Amaterasu on the go and being able to play at home. The visuals have to be seen to be believed, they’re breath taking and the adventure is nothing short of amazing. No release date was set but they did give us a Summer 2018 release window.
Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido
This game is actually coming to both the Switch and 3DS, so a double treat here. You can play battles online and it looks pretty frantic, but in a good way. I’m enjoying the very dramatic “sushi struggle” storyline and art style of the cut scenes so it could be one to watch out for. It will be released on June 8th 2018.
They announced some more key details about Octopath Traveller, the upcoming Square Enix RPG. Two of the main protagonists were revealed as well as their special traits and they also went into a little bit about the job system and the importance of it when in combat. The game will be released on July 13th 2018 alongside a special edition of the game which features an amazing looking pop up!
Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes
Travis Touchdown is making his debut on the Switch and we finally got a release window of this year, which is great news! The first two games on the Wii were amongst my favourite. Like ever. So I can’t wait for this game, I was slightly taken aback when I saw the game play but I’m glad to see they still have kept up with the insane boss designs by the looks of it. I really hope this third entry in the series (although it looks really different in terms of game play) is just like the last two but with a fresh lick of paint!
Dark Souls Remastered
Dark Souls Remastered is a game that I’ve never played, so I’m looking forward to experiencing it for the first time. However I can see how a few may see this as just another port. Quite surprisingly they announced an amiibo which releases with the game; Solaire of Astora. They didn’t really say how it will benefit you in the game other than it allows you to “perform the popular praise the sun gesture”. Dark Souls Remastered is released May 25th 2018 and before that they will also be launching a network test which allow players to experience the game before launch, more details on that at a later date.
Mario Tennis Aces
Mario Tennis Aces is actually looking to be an awesome little tennis title, I’ve never been a huge fan of the Mario Tennis series but this may be the first one I invest in. They treated us to quite a fair bit of new information about the game and how it will play, there’s new trick shots, new characters and that all important new story mode. The game will be released June 22nd 2018 and there will also be a pre launch online tournament before the game releases but no further information was given in respect of that.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is coming to the Switch and it’s armed with brand new levels based upon New Donk City from Super Mario Odyssey and I’m pretty sure there’ll be some other familiar locations too. They announced there is a 3DS version in the works as well, so you’ll be able to play it on Wii U, Switch & 3DS! Luckily the little fella is quite endearing. The game will be released July 13th 2018.
Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy
Now I’d read rumours a while back this was coming to the Switch but out of all the games that could possibly be heading to a Nintendo console, Crash Bandicoot was one of the least likely (there’s another title you’ll see in a minute that was even less likely which is why I say ‘one of’). I genuinely can’t believe that Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy is Switch bound, it’s crazy. This remake features the original 3 Crash Bandicoot games but completely remastered graphically, it was released last year on PS4 to a heap of welcome nostalgia so I’m looking forward to getting my hands on a copy. It will be released July 10th 2018.
South Park The Fractured But Whole
Don’t adjust your screens, you’re reading that correctly. South Park The Fractured But Whole is coming to the Switch. Just let that sink in. Like what! Again this was rumoured, but I never for one second thought one of the most known offensive tv shows would ever make it’s way over to the Switch, I’m so happy that it is though because I actually never finished the first game but I really enjoyed it. All of the available DLC will be available for purchase when the game launches and it’s due for release on April 24th 2018.
Splatoon 2 Update
There is a big update coming to Splatoon 2 and it looks to be one of the biggest yet, there’ll be over 100 new pieces of gear added, 3 new multiplayer maps, a new rank known as ‘X’ and the first paid DLC will launch; Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion. You can see the trailer for the DLC above, you’ll be playing as a new Octoling character through a new single player campaign and if you pre order now then you will receive special gear instantly to use during multiplayer. Due to launch in Summer this year it looks like Splatoon 2 shows no signs of slowing down yet!
Super Smash Bros.
This was by far the most insane moment, I think there’s been so many memes and articles about people just wanting this game to be announced for the Switch…now that something has finally happened I can’t quite believe it. Although there was literally no information given albeit that brief but insanely awesome trailer above, the fact we now know it’s coming just gives me this overwhelming feeling of happiness! The way they did the reveal trailer was so epic, just that glint in the inkling girls eyes and then you see the logo appear. AMAZING. Now we can all speculate and start theories about where the series will go next and what new fighters it will bring, I think it’s safe to say a couple of Splatoon characters might get a look in.
So there you have it, that’s all the major announcement trailers from today’s Nintendo Direct. A few other noteworthy mentions is Little Nightmares Complete Edition and Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition will be launching on May 18th for the Switch including all the previous DLC and Undertale will also be launching, but no date as of yet for that one.
You can also check out Nolan’s article here for more Smash Bros goodness and thanks to Gamespot, GameXplain and Nintendo UK for the trailers.
