The Nintendo Switch is launching in less than 24 hours and for me personally, I have never felt more excited for a console in a very long time! I wanted to just talk about why I’m so hyped for it and give a little speculation as to what the future may hold.
If you’re a gamer then you’re likely to have heard of a certain console launching tomorrow (OMG), so I’m sure you all know what the Switch is by now. That for a start is a hell of lot better than the Wii U’s launch back in 2012, so we’re already off to a positive. I was certainly in two minds as to whether to pre-order when the presentation happened back in January of this year, however I have owned all of Nintendo’s home consoles except the SNES and the majority of their handhelds so I wasn’t really fooling myself for long. I was definitely always going to be getting the Switch, it was just a matter of when. The big selling point for me was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild being a launch game, it’s been a long time coming with it originally coming out for just the Wii U. However things change and consoles change.
When no one knew anything about the Switch it was codenamed ‘NX‘ which now seems like a really stupid name. I mean what does that even mean! Each passing moment and new piece of information regarding the Switch has just been steadily building the hype train and right now I’m literally about to burst.
The launch line up actually sounded so rubbish and minimal in January but it seems Nintendo have been holding out on us, there have been more and more launch titles added since then and come tomorrow it actually looks like a decent line up. Of course Zelda is still the main selling point but even 1,2 Switch is great fun. I really want to pick up Super Bomberman R and there’s such an amazing line up of indie titles coming this year as well. Two of my favourite indie games got sequel announcements just the other day; Steamworld Dig 2 & Runner 3! Not to mention a whole host of others.
The console is portable as well which means I can take it to work with me, the thought of being able to play Breath of the Wild on the go and literally whenever, wherever is just magical. March really is going to be a horrendous month for my wallet though and with all the additional controllers and add-on’s available at the moment I don’t think I’m going to be able to keep up. If you missed the showcase they did the other day as well, you can watch it below:
In all honesty, I can’t actually pinpoint exactly what it is about the Switch I’m excited for as it’s just everything, the games, the console, the possibilities, its so hard to put into words. I think though with the recent popularity of Fire Emblem Heroes, Super Mario Run and Pokemon Go on mobiles, Nintendo have really had a re-think about their marketing strategies and that’s something they’ve never been great at. Just look at the Wii U’s launch, it was terrible and most people still don’t know what one is.
The Switch is incorporating the companies long history into one console and the 3D rumble could be something that I can see being used in future games, it certainly took me by surprise when I tested it out. I also think Nintendo may look into expanding their online capabilities to make playing together, messaging and using it’s features a lot smoother because friend codes and online in general have always been their weak point.
In a years time, I can see a brighter future and a successful first year behind the companies shoulders and trying to correct the Wii U’s failures can only be seen as a good thing in my eyes. Nintendo are re-branding and are slowly shedding the Wii image…here’s to a successful rebirth!
