It looks like Capcom is continuing their wave of ports for PS4 and Xbox One with Okami HD, which is coming this holiday according to Kotaku UK. This news comes from two different EU retailers who list the title coming December 12th, as well as this time around being a physical release. The last time Okami was ported to the PS3 it was digital only outside of Japan. Obviously, this could be a retailer mistake, or way off on the release timing so we should always take the information lightly. It makes sense though, with Capcom making such a large push towards more HD remasters and ports, such as Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen coming to consoles later this year as well Resident Evil: Revelations, which was previously only on the 3DS.
Okami originally came out in 2006 for the PS2 and was one of the most memorable and inventive games of that generation. I played Okami on the PS2, again when it was ported to the Wii with motion controls and when it went HD on the PS3. The sequel, Okamiden, was released for the DS in 2011 to much acclaim as well. Okami was developed by Clover Studio which was also responsible for the amazing Viewtiful Joe titles, which are some of my favorite side-scrolling beat ’em ups I’ve ever played. Both titles were so well regarded that each character also appeared in Marvel VS Capcom 3 as well with Amaterasu and Viewtiful Joe joining the roster.
Okami was one of those titles that just oozed creativity at every turn. It’s one of those games that deserves to come back every generation. I’ve been such a fan of Okami for so long, I don’t want the game to fade into the pantheon of greats, but rather continue to see support for the title until maybe we can get a proper sequel. Okami was a stellar mix of puzzle, action and amazing art style. It took all the best ideas from the other games it emulated, most notably Zelda, and managed to make something unique to itself.
Some games are truly so unforgettable I think we gobble them up every generation just to relive a bit of their glory. This is the same reason we are getting a full remake of Shadow of the Colossus, which is another masterpiece from the PS2 era.
Okami HD is currently rumored to be released December 12th for PS4 and Xbox One. Currently, there is no news of a Nintendo Switch port, which is a total bummer considering the paint brush mechanics of the game would pair great with the touch screen.
