After months of waiting and speculation, Blizzard has finally revealed that their mascot character Tracer is the character the company has been alluding to as Queer. With the release of their latest comic book we not only get to see Tracer at home and celebrating the holiday season, we also get a glimpse into the lives of some of our other favorite heroes.
The latest Blizzard comic for the critically acclaimed Overwatch explores where these heroes spend their holiday celebrations. Whether it’s with Reinhardt reading to children or a drunken McCree hanging out at a bar wit Sombra, the latest title “Reflections” adds even more character to these… characters.
You can check out “Reflections” HERE.
The best parts of the comic include Tracer and her partner Emily spending the holiday with a lonely Winston, as well as Junkrat and Roadhog wreaking havoc as usual. Torbjorn and Reinhardt playing Santa, Pharah out to dinner, and Hanzo adoring a festive cake with a child are all highlights. Some of the more somber moments include Mercy receiving a holiday letter while out in the field for work, Ana and Soldier 76 spending the holiday together, Reaper sulking in the background and Widowmaker at a grave sight viewing a gravestone.
The reactions to Tracer have been mixed, but in my own opinion her reveal was handled well. If Blizzard hadn’t revealed Tracer’s orientation, the promise they made and the representation they look for would have been absent. The reveal of Tracer’s sexuality was handled in a way that was respectable and most importantly, won’t change or reflect the character she is in any way. With Blizzard’s ability to separate story from gameplay everyone can continue to play with the knowledge that Tracer’s sexual orientation won’t affect her gameplay.
In the end the comic is a reminder to celebrate the holiday how you see fit, and try to be as kind as possible. Not everyone will be celebrating a happy Christmas morning and many people may be alone. Take the time to cherish your friends and family and spread kindness because as Tracer always says “The world could use more heroes.”
