The first trailer for Pacific Rim Uprising has arrived and it looks like there will be plenty of Kaiju smashing action. Set a few years after the events of the first film, the Kaiju have resurfaced and evolved to become more of a threat to earth than ever before. Now it’s up to a new generation of Jaeger pilots led by Jake Pentecost (John Boyega), son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), to send the Kaiju back to the rift from which they came.
While Charlie Hunnam will not be returning for the sequel, it does look like many fan-favorite characters will be returning. Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi, and Burn Gorman can all be spotted in the new trailer for Uprising, reprising their roles from the original film. However, many fans are excited to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens Star, John Boyega as the series new protagonist.
Guillermo Del Toro will also be sitting this one out with new director Steven S DeKnight taking the reigns. It should be interesting to see how much of Del Toro’s original style and visual effects will remain intact in the new film, considering it is a major reason why the first film garnered such a cult following. This will be DeKnight’s first time directing a major motion picture with most of his credits being tied to TV Shows such as Daredevil and Spartacus.
The original film was released in 2013 to a fairly successful theater run. However, most of the films cult following came along with its blu-ray release. Pacific Rim has been considered by many to be one of the best original sci-fi/action films to come out in the last decade. Pacific Rim Uprising is set to release sometime next year. An official release date has yet to be announced.
