I am thou. Thou art delayed. From the sea of thy soul, I come… sometime later.
We have to take the good with the bad, seeing as Persona 5 has been delayed until Summer 2016 but let’s hope that means we get more content, more to do, and a more polished game. Delays don’t always have to be a bad thing. From the latest trailer there’s a lot of info to take in so I did a bit of research on it. There’s but so much I can cover in one article but I will focus on the main takeaways while mentioning the minor details. Let’s begin.
The trailer opens up with our main cast fleeing a PYRAMID with frantic dialogue like, “We have to go!” I have a theory on where this pyramid is, seeing as I don’t believe they traveled to Egypt and a pyramid didn’t just sprout out of the ground in the middle of Japan. From what I noticed from the picture after zooming in, it appears we have six characters, including the main cast four characters we’ve seen through the trailers and intros. If it wasn’t obvious, we will have more cast members than what we have seen.
It appears we have a mini-map finally. That speaks volumes. The world of Persona 5 proves to be more open world and has icons available for what you can do. This might play into different places you can spend the day to raise social links or your social stats. The main character lives in the back of the coffee shop, so the coffee icon might be where home is. During the trailer as you walk the city, you hear citizens(literally dozens of NPCs) talking about accidents that have been happening. This might be a way for you to collect information on people or incidents to progress the story. Instead of being in the countryside like Inaba of Persona 4, you’re in the big city which means tons of more people. Even the school looks big and comes with a map of it’s own.
I can’t speak much on this castle. It appears this may be in relation of what the “other world” is or the main dungeon for Persona 5, similar to Tartarus of Persona 3. Our heroes wander in aimlessly but this seems to be before they have any idea what’s going on. This scene might be part of the prelude where they eventually gain their powers or another world for them to explore.
The Persona’s seem to be summoned in relation with the character’s masks this time around. My guess is they take off the masks to summon the Persona’s versus just wearing them. We also get to see the Persona of the other cast members as well. No cards or Evokers this time. I doubt that every Persona will have their own special mask for the main character but some of the higher profile Persona might get a new mask. We also get some shots of the enemies we could be facing. One guy is surrounded by money, one is surrounded by two flying eyes painted onto a canvas, and the other is a King with plenty of food and drink. The rumor is, and I do agree, that it relates to the Seven Deadly Sins. What we could see in the trailer is Greed, Pride, and Gluttony respectively.
Now for my theory: You see that purple/blue aura-like effect around the edge of the pictures above? I tried not to crop them out fully but they’re still visible. Remind you of anything? Similar to the older games, when you entered the “other world,” you had weird effects or some effect on the screen that showed you that you were in the other world. In the trailer, the characters are jumping in and out of these paintings. I think that the castle does serve as the main world for Persona 5 where you have some stealth interactions while sneaking around that castle. You may be looking for certain things or people. When you enter a painting, that’s where you enter certain maps, like the Pyramid/Desert scene in the beginning. The only thing that throws off my theory is that the protagonists are entering a large museum or art gallery in the photos above and entering the paintings could mean nothing at all.
I’m not sure on the plot but seeing as you’re playing as thieves, there’s a chance you might be playing a villain from some standpoint. People don’t seem to be too pleased with the main character appearing on the screen and the Protagonist has a bit of an evil grin on his face. They are thieves and while the Protagonist is handcuffed and being interrogated during the trailer, he’s asked something to the effect of, “How are you stealing people’s hearts.” Also, without his mask, he seems calm and placid. With the mask on, he appears psychotic and often has a large, evil smirk. I don’t have a concrete theory on how people can potentially die or are being judged in Persona 5 just yet.
I am ecstatic for Persona 5’s release, seeing as the models and artwork have come a long way. Persona didn’t look that bad on Playstation 2 but now the updated graphics on the PS3 and PS4 are sure to please. Something I’m truly excited about is now that they are on up-to-date venues, we have the potential for DLC. Seeing as it’s hard to stuff random Easter Egg battles into the game, Atlus might release some content where you can fight characters or Personas from the old games. Only time will tell. For now, I’d love to hear any comments regarding my theories and rumors, as well as hear any other rumors you guys had as well.
