The demo for Nier: Automata has dropped on PSN today. The awaited spiritual successor to the 2010 cult hit, Nier, is releasing in the west in March 2017. After playing through the demo today, I’m all on board for this mix of genre’s that blends so well together.
Nier Automata is a typical PlatinumGames game in terms of combat; I’m saying this in the best possible way. I immediately understood the mechanics of this rpg/hack and slash/top down/sidescroller/mech video game. Yea, there are a TON of different genres represented just in the 30 minute demo alone. You would think that not having one set genre wouldn’t do the game justice but Platinum knows what they’re doing because it all flows together so well and it shows.
Looking at past Platinum titles like Metal Gear Rising, Bayonetta, and The Wonderful 101, you can see really see the love put into the game. The camera works so well while you’re performing light, heavy, and aerial attacks on robotic enemies. You have full control over what actions you’re doing and the enemies attacks are fair and totally avoidable. Dodging is simple to do and it also feels so rewarding to successfully counter attacks. You also have a robot AI by your side that can lock on to enemies and shoot projectiles at them while you’re in a pinch.
While you’re running around the environments(which are beautiful and vast by the way) the camera will smoothly transition above you and beside you. Turning a third-person action game to a top down fighter and/or a side-scroller beat-em-up. These moments were awesome and I hope that Platinum utilizes this in the full game as much as possible.
Nier: Automata is shaping up to be a fantastic experience that I can’t wait to dive into come this March on PS4.
