Another day, another awesome project funded via Kickstarter. This time the project is Prey for the Gods, an upcoming adventure survival game developed by No Matter Studios.
The campaign for Prey for the Gods ended on August 6th, and while the goal was set at $300k, it ended up raising over $500k. Initially, the game was only going to be released on PC. Console versions were listed as a $600k stretch goal, but after seeing the overwhelming fan response the developer decided to make sure the game would be released for PS4 and Xbox One as well.
Set in a world of never-ending winter, you play as a hero on a journey, searching for answers. You start on a frozen island with nothing but the clothes on your back, and must find a way to survive the harsh environment and dangerous encounters. Along the way you encounter Gods, the very same ones the hero believes in, and you must destroy them one by one.
At first glance, it’s pretty clear that the game is pretty heavily influenced by PS2 title Shadow of the Colossus. Brian Parnell, one-third of No Matter Studios, took to the Playstation Blog to explain that while the goal was to harness the same “ambitious” feeling Shadow of the Colossus had, Prey for the Gods was not at all meant to be a sequel or clone.
“As a developer, I look to Shadow of the Colossus as a game that inspires ambition. I watched friends play it, and what I saw blew me away. I was amazed at what they accomplished… When approaching Prey for the Gods, we wanted to embrace that ambition. Our goal isn’t to make a sequel, or make a carbon copy of Shadow of the Colossus. We want to push ourselves to create a game that we want to play that exemplifies the core mechanics, and atmosphere that one sees — and if we do it right inspire others to do the same.”
Prey for the Gods is set to be released on PS4, Xbox One, and PC with an estimated release date of December 2017. With a project that looks this cool, it’s hard to be patient, but as they say: good things come to those who wait!
