Creator of the cult classic PaRappa the Rapper (Masaya Matsuura), has unveiled his new game Project Rap Rabbit. A website teasing the game surfaced today showing a short one minute trailer and revealing a few details about who is at work on the project. Studio NanaOn-Sha, who has worked on every PaRappa the Rapper title to date is involved, as well as iNiS who has worked on a number of rhythm games including Gitaroo-Man.
A Twitter account for Project Rap Rabbit revealed some more information stating, “The creators of PaRappa The Rapper and Gitaroo Man combine forces to develop a new story-driven, rhythm-action adventure. Stay tuned…” No details have been given as far as a release date or what platforms the game will be released on. One could only assume that given Sony’s renewed interest in the PaRappa series with the HD remaster of the original PaRappa the Rapper earlier this year on PS4 that the game would make its way to PlayStation.
As for the new project, this marks the first time Masaya Matsuura and Keiichi Yano (creator of Gitaroo-Man) have collaborated together on a project. Aside from PaRappa, Masaya worked on the rhythm game Vib-Ribbon for the PS1 which was only released in Japan and Europe. It later made its way to the US on the PlayStation store in 2014 after being requested heavily by fans of the game. Keiichi Yano has also worked on the Ouendan series for the Nintendo DS which inspired the spin-off title Elite Beat Agents that was released in the US.
Many fans of Elite Beat Agents and Vib-Ribbon have wanted sequels for these titles for quite a while. So it will be interesting with work beginning on the PaRappa spiritual successor if we shall get any progress for these titles moving forward in the future.
