In celebration of the Stockholm Pride Festival, Swedish video game retailer, Webhallen, is auctioning off a one-of-a-kind PS4 “Gaystation Edition,” of which 100% of the proceeds will go to RFSL (which stands for ‘The Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights’ in Swedish).
The PS4, which is designed in the colors of the pride flag with a pixel heart in the center, surpassed $2,000 in bids, in under 24 hours.
“For many young people, the video game world becomes a refuge from the taunts, or worse, in real life. At Webhallen, we are gamers in heart and mind, and are keen that as many as possible should have the opportunity to feel welcome and enjoy the world’s largest and fastest growing interest: computer and video games,”
Webhallen explains in their post (translated to English). With the LGBT community growing in all parts of the world, more support is being shown and a new light is being casted on “gaymers.” With games from developers like BioWare and Bethesda that are LGB friendly, players who are part of the LGBT community are able to relate to characters and feel more involved, making gaming a whole new escape from a world where many still do not accept them.
The gaming community, which has held out open arms, is perhaps one of the biggest supporters of the LGBT community and, in turn, has grown from it. A great example of this is the relatively new GaymerX conventions. With all the support, it is safe to say that the gaming community and the LGBT community now go hand-in-hand, and the “Gaystation” proves it.
The PS4 will come with a 500 GB hard drive, DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller and charger, a mono headset and charger, HDMI cable and a choice of four games (with the exception of collectors editions). Bidding will end August 2.
