Sony has announced that the PS4 has reached another significant sales milestone in the UK of 1 million units sold. This makes it the second fastest selling console of all time in the UK market after the original Wii, a sales statistic which is a slight anomaly considering the territory is traditionally not a strong one for Nintendo.
These sales figures are continuing encouragement for Sony as it brings total world sales to over 10M units, officially consolidating it as the fastest selling console of all time in the global market. The PS4 is currently dominating the next-gen market, outselling the Xbox One 3:1 on overall units sold and with the heavily anticipated timed exclusive release of Destiny this week it is unclear how Microsoft will be able to address the ever growing gap between the two consoles.
Both consoles are however struggling to find traction in the Japanese market with PS4 slow on the uptake and XBOXOne undergoing the most understated launch I’ve ever witnessed in Tokyo last week. Portable gaming holds much more dominance with both 3DS and Vita dominating the game shop fronts. Once Sony releases a number of Japan centric titles, slated for 2015 and beyond including Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3, they will hope sales of its home console will boom in their domestic market. This could further solidify its place as the now current-gen platform of choice.
