If you’re anything like myself, then you already have your spurs polished and your saddle fitted for the October 26th release date of Red Dead Redemption 2. However, news has surfaced from the game’s art director (Josh Bass) that reveals that a key feature from Rock Star Studios last title, Grand Theft Auto V, will not be making its way into the new wild west open world adventure.
Grand Theft Auto V‘s campaign relied heavily on the ability to switch between characters on the fly. This made it so that players were able to experience three unique stories and give ample background into the group’s diverse cast of characters. Many had assumed that since Red Dead Redemption 2‘s campaign would follow a large group of bandits that the same mechanic would be a part of the game. According to the game’s art director, this is not the case.
Josh Bass recently spoke with the Hollywood Reporter about some of the game’s story details. During the interview, it was revealed that the game’s protagonist, Arthur Morgan, would be the only playable character and the focus of the story.
“Switching characters made sense and was a lot of fun in Grand Theft Auto V,” said Bass.”Sticking with a single character felt more appropriate for the structure and narrative of a Western.”
Bass made it clear, however, that even though the focus is on Arthur we will become well acquainted with the rest of the members of the gang.
“Arthur lives with and fights alongside the other members of the Van der Linde gang, and they are a group of fully realized characters with relationships to each other and to Arthur, but this is Arthur’s story and we are placing players firmly in Arthur’s boots as he and the gang deal with a rapidly changing world. We think people will really love the feeling of being in the gang. It isn’t like anything we’ve done before.”
Rock Star has always done a great job of fleshing out a colorful cast of characters, so we are expecting to see no less when Red Dead Redemption 2 drops later this year.
