Since pretty much the start of ‘League of Legends‘, the banning system has been, to say the least, confusing. Seeming to allow players to troll, or completely endorse the idea of wanting to lose; community harassment, or genuinely just not being a friendly player. However, players would become banned for questionable reasons, and play styles, that indirectly would help, and support their team. Even if it was at a minor cost, leading to obvious rage, and disappointment throughout the community.
Players were banned, due to unusual, but innovative play styles, where they would counter the enemy completely, with the sacrifice of leaving lane. This lead to the dynamic world of League players to reporting the player in question, for trolling. As this continued RIOT would evaluate the report. Consequently banning, as they seemed fit.
In hindsight, this seems completely unfair, as players were punished, by the company; for trying and successfully creating new meta picks, which worked no matter their abnormality. The main idea that these reports have revolved around, is where a support would leave the bot lane, and counter jungle early on; completely disrupting the enemy jungler. Stopping early ganks, and jungler pressure, subsequently making lanes easier and safer. Whilst hoarding the cost that the ADC, would solo the bot lane for some time, early on.
I can think of two prime examples, a player named ‘AdellaideSkyhart‘ and ‘Levi “Take the Draw” Moreno‘. Who both received extensive and consistent bans, for their unusual play style. As Adellaide would take Singed support, and Take the Draw would use Nunu support. They would both invade the enemy jungler and completely counter their paths, stealing buffs, and sometimes gain first blood or force summoner spells. Despite both these ideas working and holding great success rates. They were reported and banned. Leading to outrage from both players, as they believed they shouldn’t be banned, for an ‘unusual’ play style.
Since their outrage has been voiced, RIOT have listened, and have genuinely took this idea on board. Leading to a change in rules, which have taken away the ability to be banned for questionable picks. As some picks are recognized as a successful path to victory. Although RIOT employees have strongly asserted; trolling will not be accepted, and the line between trolling, and non-meta is quite obvious. So this isnt a rule change that will increase unsportsmanlike conduct, but will hopefully improve the game and its opportunities.
Honestly to me, this is a welcomed change, I believe the banning system within League of Legends is widely outdated. In need of a major mix up, maybe this is the start of that mix up that will allow players to outplay in a more strategic manner. Without the risk of flame or harassment; followed up with a ban. What do you think? Is it a good change? Or will it just increase completely unethical picks?
Not only that, but are RIOT really willing to make changes? Or is this just a way to silence the rage that has built up?
