Rose Colored Gaming is changing the way we play our retro GB and GBA games. Not necessarily changing the game itself but more of a change in aesthetics as they have completely re-imaged my favorite handheld of my childhood. Customized Gameboy shells aren’t anything new and they absolutely have been done before. The difference here is in the way that Rose Colored Gaming caters to fanboys and retro buffs alike. The various color pallets used are some of the best and they really stand out. I mean you are sure to get a couple of people staring at you while you play with your customized GBA, and how can they not. Aside from plain colors, they also have some really nice original patterns like the Icy hot or Space Cadet models. One of my favorite shells for the GBA however, were the “Get a life” and “Grow Up” shells, which were both mushroom themed patterns that sported the renowned red and green mushrooms from Super Mario Bros. Although these are original patterns and pallets( that have since been retired), you still get that feeling as though Rose Colored Gaming is specifically catering to your gaming past.
Even though their most advertised shells are of the GBA, they customize more than just this handheld. Rose Colored Gaming also has customized GBC and Neo Geo pocket shells, amongst other accessories and handhelds, that are just as vivid as their famous GBA models. What I love most about RCG’s customization style is that everything looks brand new and for the most part they are. First noticeable difference from RCG shells and the original handhelds, is that RCG shells have a glass screen instead of plastic. This gives it a shinier, more clean finish than the original. All RCG models have backlit screens as well, and yes that includes the GBC models. The most impressive factor of all was that RCG covers all parts and labor under warranty, which is very important when dealing with customized shells.
They also offer DIY kits for adding a backlight to your GBA with a free online instruction manual as well. RCG also sells GBA and GBC glass lens if you wish to replace the one on your current model. One of the more eye catching tabs on the site was their games section. To my surprise they also have custom games that they sell! For example, they have a Zelda limited edition set which offers two Zelda carts, Zelda: Goddess of Wisdom and Zelda: Parallel Worlds. Both are custom games and they also have custom cart designs, which look both authentic and retro. Sadly, this was a limited edition cart and there were only 50 made but RCG always has new games and shells on the way so make sure to check their Facebook and Rose Colored Gaming blog consistently.
Which brings me to the reason why I wanted to cover Rose Colored Gaming in the first place. RCG has a line of SNES and Super Famicon themed GBA’s coming out this month and they look amazing. The colors are spot on and they really bring you way back to your early childhood. I don’t know about you guys but I’ll be constantly refreshing RCG’s blog and Facebook page until I see this bad boy up for sale.
