Overwatch fans, prepare yourself for the ultimate console wars if the cross console play rumors prove to be true!
During last year’s BlizzCon, Blizzard said that there would be no cross-play between either of the consoles and PC. This was stated for some obvious reasons by senior designer, Jeremy Craig, who was quoted as saying, “From a gameplay standpoint, mouse and keyboard has a little bit of an advantage in terms of being able to spin really quickly. And our game is pretty fast-paced.”
However, cross console play is not off the table for the overwhelmingly popular team-based first person shooter. Cross console play has become a topic of conversation as of late with the release of Rocket League to both Playstation 4 and Xbox One, which would pit members of The Playstation Network (PSN) and Xbox Live against one another in online play. No game has ever been able to offer this type of competitive multiplayer yet, but way back in March of this year, Microsoft did come out and say that it was open to the idea of connecting Xbox to Playstation through their paid membership services. Psyonix, which is the developer behind Rocket League, has also reported some promising news on the subject by saying that they already have the technicalities figured out, but now are playing the waiting game as Sony and Microsoft play the political game to actually put cross-play into circulation.
If cross console play is possible and coming, then Blizzard has stated it will “keep an eye on cross-platform possibilities on the consoles.” So, nothing has been confirmed, thus why I stated earlier that it’s just a rumor, but fans could be looking forward to battling it out not only across continents, but also across systems as the future of cross-play gets sorted out between the two console giants.
