With Insomniac’s Spider-Man releasing later this year, there has been a lot of talk about Marvel’s plans for future video game projects. And while we do know that Square Enix is working on the Avengers video game, the big question now is if the Marvel video games will feature a connected universe.
A few outlets that have had the ability to play the upcoming Spider-Man game have mentioned spotting sites such as Stark Tower, The Wakandan Embassy, and Sanctum Sanctorum. Of course, many people have spotted Sanctum Sanctorum on their own by watching the trailers for the game as well.
However, since we know that these locations will be present in the game, many have been asking whether or not we will see other iconic Marvel characters in Spider-Man. Which leads to the even bigger question: Is Square Enix Avengers game connected to Insomniac’s Spider-Man?
In a recent interview that The Telegraph conducted with Bill Rosemann (Marvel Comics Editor, currently Executive Creative Director for Insomniac’s Spider-Man), a few questions were brought up about the potential of a Marvel connected universe in the video game landscape.
When asked about the potential for a connected gaming universe Rosemann said, “I don’t want to put the cart before the horse. Even in the MCU they started with individual movies.”
Rosemann then goes onto explain how the Marvel Cinematic Universe started with a solo Iron Man movie. He says that the intention was to just make a good Iron Man movie just like Insomniac wants to make a good Spider-Man game. He then adds, “Who knows what the future holds?”
Of course, Rosemann never admits whether or not Spider-Man is the first game in a Marvel connected universe, but he does say that the version of New York present in the game will feel like that from the comics. Featuring familiar locales that “will make you feel like it’s part of a larger story.”
Finally, when Rosemann is asked how Square Enix’s Avengers could possibly tie into Spider-Man he replies, “Again, I don’t want to talk about that now. We just want to focus on Marvel Spider-Man. Um. But I will say… we’re all Marvel fans!”
This is an interesting comment that of course still answers nothing, but it does leave Marvel fans with the hope that a connected video game universe is still a possibility.
So what do you guys think? Is a Marvel connected universe still a possibility for the video games? Is the Square Enix Avengers project connected to Insomniac’s Spider-Man? Be sure to comment and let us know your thoughts and for more great gaming news and articles be sure to check out WTFGamersonly.
