It appears something huge (literally) may be in the works for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We already have an idea what Marvel has planned for the future of the MCU, but do those plans include Red Hulk; possibly the Thunderbolts? Be aware, spoilers follow!
WAW (We are Wakanda) has reported a reliable source claims General “Thunderbolt” Ross will be playing the part of the Red Hulk in next year’s Captain America: Civil War. No, seriously. The source also claims this transformation into the Red Hulk will bring Bruce Banner back to the rest. If you’ve already seen Avengers: Age of Ultron, you know the Hulk flies off at the end, presumably to go back into hiding. If this isn’t enough, the sources says there will be large scale fight sequence between the Hulk and Red Hulk comparable to the Hulk vs Hulkbuster scene in Age of Ultron, but that’s not all.
Considering the abundance of Marvel heroes and villains in Captain America: Civil War, there may be a lot more than meets the eye here. For example, Baron Zemo has been confirmed for Civil War, but why? We also know Bucky Barnes plays a major role in the MCU. In the comics, Baron Zemo outs Bucky as the Winter Soldier to stir up controversy for the government act both Iron Man and Captain America fight because of. It’s also interesting to note that Baron Zemo also puts together two separate teams in the comics, the Masters of Evil and the Thunderbolts. Interestingly, characters from both teams have already appeared in previous MCU films and some are rumored to appear in upcoming films.
It appears Marvel will be going with the latter of the two teams in their MCU. As we already know, Marvel doesn’t exactly follow any one source for their movies. Avengers: Age of Ultron for example, took inspiration from several Marvel comics. There’s a very great possibility that Baron Zemo could begin to put together a Thunderbolts team in Captain America: Civil War that would include the likes of Thaddeus Ross (Red Hulk), Abomination, Crossbones, Klaw and wait for it…Norman Osborn. Yes, rumors have been swirling that Marvel has had there eye on Matthew McConaughey to play Norman Osborn in the Spider-Man reboot. Could this imply the Thunderbolts will be involved in Captain America: Civil War?
The first question that comes to mind is, why? With Thanos coming, it would seem like there’s already enough going on in Civil War to warrant the addition of another team of superheroes/villains, but there lies the answer; Thanos. The Infinity Wars story arc needs to be massive to accommodate for all of the superheroes and villains it contains. Without the Fantastic Four (an otherwise important piece of the story), Marvel will have to change things up a bit. What better way to add depth to the Infinity Wars stories than to add more formidable teams for Thanos to face; there’s a reason Infinity Wars will be shown in two parts.
Hopefully, the rumors prove true and Civil War proves that a comic book movie could work with a bunch of characters that get little to no exposition. As a huge fan of both the movies and comics, I believe Thanos needs to be completely different than any of the villains we’ve seen in the MCU thus far. Thanos’ first appearance needs to hold some significant weight in order for us to recognize him as the threat that he is. If the rumors prove true, Red Hulk and the Thunderbolts would be a huge addition to the new Avengers, old Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy that will presumably face off against Thanos; only time will tell.
