Sega has confirmed the price and launch date for the Shenmue Collection, which will feature both Shenmue 1 & 2 for the first time on modern platforms. The collection will release on August 21st for PS4, Xbox One and PC for $29.99. Although they are not full on remakes or remasters in the sense we’re used to, the pack will include some upgrades to the Shenmue experience. Those features include variable resolution, optional control schemes, an updated UI and both English and Japanese vocal tracks. Check out the trailer for the re-release to get an idea of what to expect this August.
Shenmue was originally released back in 1999 for the Sega Dreamcast, with its sequel coming two years later. Both titles were known for their impressively detailed open worlds and rich combat system. The series also boasted a large array of mini games available to distract the player. Think Yakuza if you’re unfamiliar with the Shenmue formula as that series took a lot of its’ cues from Shenmue.
This collection is of course serving more than one purpose by releasing on modern consoles and PC. Shenmue 3 was announced back in 2015 to be in development with series creator Yu Suzuki at the helm. While we wait to see how the story might finally end for Ryo Hazuki, long time fans and newcomers alike can revisit what made Shenmue 1 & 2 so special in the first place when the Shenmue Collection arrives on August 21st.
