Yacht Club Games has really spoiled the fans of its critically acclaimed indie darling, Shovel Knight. Ever since the definitive version of the game (Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove) was released in early 2017, Yacht Club has been working hard on adding several free expansions to the game. But the newest Shovel Knight expansion might not be what you expect, as it adds it’s own form of multiplayer brawling to the mix. The newly announced Shovel Knight Showdown, which was revealed via IGN, gives us the series take on the competitive fighting genre. This multiplayer expansion adds arena battles for up to four players and a variety of options such as free-for-all and team battles. As far as gameplay goes, Shovel Knight Showdown resembles a scaled down version of SuperSmash Bros.

However, the fun doesn’t have to be enjoyed with friends as the new expansion will also feature a single-player mode. This single-player mode is said to contain a story tailored for each individual character. This means that there will be an incentive to beat the game with all playable characters.
Speaking of characters, there will be a total of 16 different ones who have appeared throughout the expansions. It will be our first time taking control of many of the unique bosses from the series, which gives us plenty of reason to be excited about this new update.
Sadly we won’t be playing it this year, as Yacht Club Games announced that it would launch alongside the long-awaited King of Cards expansion that the studio has promised us for quite some time. Both will be released for free to Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove owners on April 9th, 2019. Shovel Knight Showdown will also be available for purchase separately for $9.99 to anyone who does not wish to purchase Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove.
For those physical fiends out there that insist on having a copy for their shelves, fret not. Yacht Club Games is releasing a physical version of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove for PS4 and Nintendo Switch and it is set to hit retail alongside the release of both expansions, April 9th, 2018.
For some reason, the physical version will retail for $39.99, even though you can purchase it digitally right now for $24.99. Both the digital and physical game will come with all of the same content, so its a tad strange that there is that much of a price difference. Hopefully, there are some extra goodies in there that help give it that bump in value, but just something you might want to consider if you haven’t already purchased the game.
