Nintendo just held their March Direct and there were plenty of announcements to get excited about. However, the big mic drop moment came at the very end of the show when Nintendo unveiled that Smash Bros. Switch would be coming out this year.
Nintendo tricked stream viewers by showing what looked to be another Splatoon related trailer. By the end, the Smash Bros. logo was revealed with Mario and Breath of the Wild Link lurking in the shadows. Finally, the name Super Smash Bros. appeared on screen with no other details other than the date 2018.
Unfortunately, as of now, we do not know if this Smash Bros. game is a port of the 3DS/WiiU games or an altogether new game. The trailer does imply that we will see some new faces in the character roster. Both Inkling Girl and Inkling Boy should be new playable characters if the trailer is to be believed. As well as Breath of the Wild Link which at this time remains a mystery if he will be a new character or a simple re-skin of the original Link on Smash Bros.
Since the trailer was so brief, it’s clear that Nintendo will provide more information in the future about the upcoming Smash Bros. title. The most likely guess is that we will hear more at this years E3 conference. Until then we are left with a lot of questions and not a whole lot of answers. But regardless this is the news that every Nintendo fan has been waiting for.
While many fans would be excited for just a port of Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U, it would be incredible if we got a brand new Smash Bros. game exclusively for Switch. It would hands down be the biggest game that Nintendo could drop for year two of their successful hybrid console.
We will, of course, provide any updates as we receive them. For more about Nintendo’s March Direct be sure to check out WTFGamersonly.
