Insomniac’s Spider-Man is looking better than ever, now with a slated release date of 9/7/18 exclusively for the PS4. In their ongoing coverage for the title this month, gameinformer released a video featuring developers from Insomniac talking about how they tackled the web swinging physics and specifics for how the swinging will work in game. You can check out the link above with those details, and catch a few good shots of Spidey in motion in the video below.
Spider-Man games have never really been in short supply, and the art of web swinging has always been a major draw point for the success of past titles. Spider-Man 2 was the first to implement a system of dynamic swinging, connecting the webs to buildings and pulling Spider-Man with more realistic physics. Insomniac’s Spider-Man is the next evolution of this system. The developers explain in the gameinformer video about their desire to retain momentum, and keep the player moving forward.
Spider-Man swings at high speed, while being able to practically turn on a dime or run in any direction if you swing into a building. These option have of course been possible in previous Spider-Man games, but the fluidity possible now is much more seamless and engaging with the way the camera pulls around with you adding to the effects when leaping and springing forward in air. Bouncing off of traffic signals, rebounding towards a building and pulling yourself forward all look like they’ve been done wonderfully well in creating the type of movement Spider-Man would have. Hopefully we get some online time trials and races for Insomniac’s Spider-Man because that could keep me caught for hours working the quickest method through areas.
We also get to see a bit of how Spider-Man will fast travel in this title, obviously by taking the subway. This is a great little touch that a Redditor pointed out would probably work if Spider-Man were real as most people would just think he was some hardcore cosplayer.
Insomniac’s Spider-Man is looking like a fantastic upcoming title with a lot of attention being paid to detail that will help enhance the open world we’ll be taking Spider-Man through this time around. Spider-Man is set to release on September 7th for the PS4 exclusively.
