Everyone has flipped through at least one strategy guide. Whether it was on the electronics aisle of the store trying to figure out how to beat a boss, or on the living room of your parent’s floor as you were desperate to find every hidden collectible. Strategy guides have been a vital part of gaming culture for years. It seems that may not be the case anymore as the biggest name in strategy guides, Prima Games shuts down.
Prima has announced that it will no longer be publishing new strategy guides starting now. All of its existing projects will be finished with the last guide being released in spring for Bioware’s Anthem.
Online guides produced by IGN and GameFAQs are most likely the cause for Prima’s demise. Online guides are convenient, constantly updated, and not to mention free. So it’s easy to see why so many have switched over to online sources for game guides.
There are also plenty of popular YouTube channels such as PS4Trophies that can show you all the hidden secrets in games via brief short-form video. Prima Games may have been one of the oldest strategy guide publishers out there, but the internet has created some of its most hardcore competition.
Prima Games was founded in 1990 where it quickly became a name that all gamers were familiar with. Creating guides for a wide spectrum of games across all platforms. It consumed one of it’s biggest competitors in 2015 when Brady Games merged with Prima.
28 years of history is a long legacy to leave behind, especially in an industry that is still so young. Prima Games will always be remembered by a generation of gamers for helping us conquer the unbeatable. Not to mention all of the incredible memories of flipping through the awesome game art and oversized fold-out maps.
