There have been millions of custom levels released from all over the world in the short time that Super Mario Maker has been around. And out of the millions of levels, how do you make people want to play yours? Even though there’s no real rhyme or reason, there are a few things you can do to make sure your level is as creative as possible.
1. Play Other Creators’ Levels
That’s right! In order to start making your perfect level the best way to start is by looking at what everyone else has already done. Everyone has someone they’re inspired by and every person can be an inspiration. In the short time I’ve played this game I’ve found playing the custom levels made by players are far more helpful than the 10-course Mario pre-made levels.
2. Make Friends your Enemies
People expect to walk into a level and have to avoid Hammer Bros and Bowser with a Chain Chomp attached to his back, but some of the more fun levels I’ve played haven’t had any enemies like this at all. For example, a level cover with P Switches. Everywhere. On the floor, shooting from Bullet Bill, and raining down from above. The objective is simple, don’t touch a P Switch. Because when you do the floor disappears no matter where you are.
3. Place an Objective
We all know the general objective of Super Mario has been to get from Point A to Point B without accidentally slaughtering yourself along the way. Now that we’ve put our own little flair into the level, why not take a page from another type of game? For instance in the original Pokémon Games, you weren’t able to cross the water without HM03 Surf. Apply a principle like this to Super Mario Maker and lock the end of the level behind a door blocked by Donut Blocks. Now the player has to find a P Switch to make the blocks disappear and access the door.
4. Simplicity is your Friend
Most people have the same idea when first creating a Mario level. Attempt to make a level that even the most hardcore Mario players couldn’t get through. It’s awesome, it’s challenging and it’s near impossible, but creating the perfect level means finding the perfect balance of “this is too hard” and “this level was fun.” Trying to make something so impossible could be fun for the sake of creating, but keep in mind that the creator has to beat these levels too before they can even be uploaded!
